A graduating student from a practical or registered nursing program has to apply for licensure with the Board of Nursing of the state in which he or she intends to practice. Each BON has its own set of qualifying requirements.

Some states such as Kansas, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, New York and North Dakota have their own accrediting bodies that evaluate the nursing programs within their states. A BON may not require ACEN, CCNE, or CNEA accreditation for taking the NCLEX and becoming licensed.

State BONs usually list the nursing programs that they approve. Often, these lists include a number of schools that do not have national accreditation. Sometimes, the BON will not approve a school that has national accreditation.

There are several reasons for this disparity: They differ on the purpose of accreditation/approval. Accreditation agencies focus on quality, development of knowledge and competence, and program effectiveness. BONs focus on public protection and enforcement of standards, and they usually set up minimum criteria for approval. A school may have a newly developed program not yet licensed but that meet the BON BONs are more closely in touch with programs within the state and can monitor performance of the schools on graduation rates and NCLEX performance. BONs can investigate reports on fraudulent programs and have the authority to close programs.

National Accreditation Vs Regional Accreditation

There are two types of institutional accreditation: national and regional, both of which are equally recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Thousands of educational institutions hold each type of institutional accreditation. Nursing schools can have national accreditation, regional accreditation or both of them. For more details on institutional accreditation, please view our National vs Regional Accreditation video.

National Accreditation

National accreditation is a type of institutional accreditation that is not bound to certain geographical areas. National accreditation is newer than regional accreditation, but it is just as authoritative. Most private colleges have national accreditation, as opposed to regional accreditation, which is more common with non-profit colleges.

Regional Accreditation

As opposed to national accreditation, regional accreditation bodies are restricted to a certain geographical area.

There are six different regional accrediting organizations that serve different parts of the United States and they are all recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation :

The University Of Central Florida

Students who have a dream of someday completing a graduate degree after their BSN would be wise to check out the RN to BSN program at the University of Central Florida, which allows students to earn up to nine credit hours of graduate work while completing their undergraduate degree.

The RN to BSN program allows students to complete the degree at their own pace so that individuals who want to finish the degree as quickly as possible can zip through it in as little as three semesters and those that need more time can take as long as ten semesters.

The program is a 30 credit hour program that places a strong emphasis on the sciences involved in nursing. This university also offers students an ASN to BSN program that can be completed in as little as six semesters. Like the RN to BSN program the ASN to BSN program also allows students to earn credit toward a graduate degree while earning their bachelors.

Approval By Your State Board Of Nursing

Nursing programs also need to be approved by their states Board of Nursing. You wont be able to take the NCLEX exam for licensing if your program isnt approved. Though all nationally accredited schools will also be approved by their state, its possible for a school to be approved but not accredited. The difference comes down to what accreditation offers in terms of financial aid, using your credits, and career competitiveness.

National Accreditation

  • Prepares you for licensure and practice
  • Allows you to sit for the NCLEX exam
  • Qualifies you for federal financial aid
  • Lets you transfer schools or apply credits to an advanced degree

State Board Approval

  • Prepares you for licensure and practice
  • Allows you to sit for the NCLEX exam
