Daily Physical Requirements & Emotional Considerations

Unlike nurse practitioners who work in emergency rooms and hospitals, the physical demands required of a dermatology nurse practitioner are minor. Generally dermatology patients are able to care for themselves and will not need to be lifted, carried, or assisted with basic needs. Surgery can be more demanding, so surgical dermatology nurse practitioners should be prepared for the rigors of that particular sub-specialty.

Many nurse practitioners deal with significant tragedies on a regular basis. While dermatology nurse practitioner will likely encounter patients with skin cancer, when treated at an early stage, even the most aggressive forms of skin cancer can be cured completely, according to the American Academy of Dermatology . This means that the emotional demands for a dermatology nurse practitioner are overall less significant that those of a critical care nurse practitioner, for instance, or a pediatric oncology nurse practitioner. Day-to-day, DNPs deal with mostly healthy people and are able to offer healing treatments on a regular basis.

Here Is How Pennsylvania Can Retain More Nurse Practitioners

Graduation season is here and for the world of nursing, it cant come soon enough. My students who will become registered nurses or doctors of nursing practice will serve patients amid a hiring shortage in all 50 states. As a nurse practitioner myself, I see how badly needed they are.

As president of the Pennsylvania Coalition of Nurse Practitioners , I want as many NPs as possible to stay in Pennsylvania and serve patients here. As chair of the nursing program at West Chester University, I want my students to succeed at the top of our field.

Unfortunately those things are in conflict some NPs will have to leave Pennsylvania in order to rise to the highest level of their education and training. Thats because other states offer NPs a more competitive practice environment than Pennsylvania. New York is the most recent state to modernize its rules for NPs, joining a list of 26 states including our neighbors in Delaware and Maryland.

Im worried my daughter will be one of the NPs who has to leave. After five years of serving patients, she is completing her masters degree as a family NP right now. She cant wait to start the next chapter of her nursing career. Neither can employers she receives a daily deluge of recruitment outreach from hospitals and health systems up and down the east coast. There is fierce competition to hire NPs, and I want Pennsylvania to retain as many as possible. I want my daughter and my students to be able to flourish close to home.

New Agreement With West Chester University Benefits Nursing Students

West Chester University and Delaware County Community College have signed an agreement that will enable qualified Delaware County Community College students, pursuing an Associate in Applied Science Nursing Degree , to concurrently enroll, on a provisional basis, into the Registered Nurse-Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program at West Chester University.

The new agreement helps students save time and money in their pursuit of the RN-BSN degree. Typically, RN-BSN programs require that individuals graduate from an accredited pre-licensure nursing program and successfully obtain licensure as a registered nurse before enrollment in BSN coursework. With this new concurrent degree program, students, who meet West Chester University RN-BSN admission requirements and are in good standing in Delaware County Community Colleges nursing program, can pursue both the associate and baccalaureate degrees in nursing simultaneously.

At a time when skilled nurses are in demand, this concurrent degree program is of great benefit to our students and to the healthcare industry, said Dr. L. Joy Gates Black, president of Delaware County Community College.

The close collaboration between our two educational institutions has resulted in the development of a cost-effective, defined-academic pathway that moves beyond traditional RN-BSN articulation agreements. It

Dermatology Nurse Practitioner Scope Of Practice

During some downtime at work this afternoon, several nurses and I were discussing our need for some BotoxSTAT. Our love of sunshine seems to be catching up with us resulting in unsightly, premature forehead wrinkles. Ultimately, we decided the solution to our problem was for these nurses to go back to school and become dermatology nurse practitioners. But how?

Dermatology is one of the more specialized areas of nurse practitioner work. A dermatology nurse practitioner specializes in treating all types of disease and medical issues that manifest on the surface of the skin. These conditions can vary from acne to skin cancer and everything in between. Many nurse practitioners find this kind of specialization rewarding, both professionally and economically.

If you think you may want to pursue work as a dermatology nurse practitioner , read on to learn what you can expect.

Newly hired individuals will be required to provide proof of their COVID-19 vaccination. There is an opportunity to request an exemption from the vaccine requirements for medical reasons, sincerely held reasons of conscience, or religious beliefs.

Clinical Environment & Typical Daily Procedures

The majority of dermatology nurse practitioners work at a dermatology clinic. Unlike some other specialties, it would be very rare to find a dermatology nurse practitioner in an emergency room or other high volume, high stress position. Indeed, this may be why many dermatology nurse practitioners pursue such a career. The nature of the work in this profession is such that NPs can have a more flexible, less demanding schedule while still earning a comfortable income and helping patients in need.

A dermatology nurse practitioner should be prepared to do many assessments on a regular basis. DNPs often spend much of their day in consultation with patients, diagnosing and treating skin issues as well as performing regular dermatological check ups. Some minor procedures, such as mole removals, skin peels, or acne treatments are also commonplace for dermatology nurse practitioners. Even a surgical DNP will not necessarily spend each day in surgery, and will need to be comfortable assessing and treating patients in an acute care setting.

Notable Dermatology Nurse Practitioner Programs

Training as a dermatology nurse practitioner, for most who want to pursue the specialty, involves professional dedication and finding a clinic that is will to work with and train you. This is because there is only one dermatology nurse practitioner fellowship in the United States, and only one school that offers specific training in the specialty. While nurses that complete these programs are certainly well-trained, neither is necessary to pursue a career as a dermatology nurse practitioner. Rather, the majority of DNPs learn on-the-job from other nurses and medical professionals. Most important, then, is for prospective DNPs to secure a job at a reputable dermatology clinic that is will to train them.

The Lahey Hospital & Medical Center in Burlington, Massachusetts offers the countrys only nurse practitioner fellowship in dermatology. The fellowship is a two-year program that allows nurse practitioners to learn dermatology through a didactic and clinical curriculum. The program is affiliated with the Harvard Medical School Dermatology Residency program, which gives enrolled nurses access to many resources, including weekly Grand Rounds. Fellows who are accepted to the program are hired as full time employees at the hospital and may work in Burlington, Lexington, or Peabody, Massachusetts.
