Important Considerations When Comparing Schools

Many students get caught up in the tuition rate or prestige of schools. While these are important factors, you should be considering much more before applying to or attending any school.
Important factors to consider include:
- Location of institution
While it may seem small, a school lacking either of these accreditations may not be worth the time or money it costs to earn the degree.

A $5 million gift from Joanne and Bill Conway will go towards supporting the University of Virginias fast-track-to-nursing program for non-nurses entering the profession. Their gift will go into effect in 2018, extending a gift bestowed in 2013 and furthering the couples support of the UVA School of Nursing.
The Conways contributions to UVA have helped diversify the nursing student body by bringing a particular focus to students from underrepresented and minority groups, including men. Their newest gift is expected to provide scholarships to over 110 new nurses over five years, bringing new skills and experience from outside nursing to the bedside. School of Nursing Dean, Dorrie K. Fontaine, told UVAToday,
The Conways are forging real, meaningful change in nursing because theyre bringing even more people to nursing who look like, talk like, and understand the patients they serve.
New funding from the Conways is coming at a monumental moment for UVA as they celebrate the 10th year of their first Clinical Nurse Leader masters program. The program was the first of its kind in Virginia, providing a path to nursing for non-nurses who hold a bachelors degree or higher in another field. Students in the fast-track-to-nursing program spend two years attending intensive academic courses before starting clinical rotations with a personal veteran nurse preceptor.

Uva School Of Nursing Sees Large Jump In Applications Most Diverse Pool Ever
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -The University of Virginia School of Nursing says the program saw a significant increase in applicants this year. That, while a student group is seeking to increase the amount of diversity in years to come.
Applications for the School of Nursing are up more than 51% from last year and the school says the class enrolling this fall will be the most diverse nursing class ever.
Last year they were a little over 1,200 and this year theyre over 1,900 and thats very exciting to us, UVAs Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program Director Tomeka Dowling said.
Dowling said the reasons for the spike vary. In addition to being inspired by front line hospital employees, applicants no longer had to take a standardized test, such as the SAT, and many look forward to the hands-on experience the university continues to offer.
UVA is offering in-person instruction as well as on grounds living and even though 80% of our courses this fall were offered in an online setting, and we anticipated that may be the same for the spring, we continued to offer quality instruction, she said.
All factors that also led to the most diverse class ever with nearly half of early decision offers being made to underrepresented minority students. A goal two current students helped make reality and hope to build on.
