Usf Will House Center That Tracks Nursing Shortages In Florida

V-CARE at USF College of Nursing

Florida officials on Wednesday celebrated the revival of a center that will anticipate and try to prevent nursing shortages around the state, an effort that now will be headquartered at the University of South Florida.

I think its really important for the state of Florida to be able to monitor whats going on, said Rayna Letourneau, an assistant professor in the USF College of Nursing. She and others attended a ceremony where State Rep. Fentrice Driskell presented an oversized check to university leaders and the Florida Nurses Association as a symbol of renewed state funding for the center.

The Legislature established the Florida Center for Nursing in 2001, and tasked it with maintaining a database on nursing supply and demand in the state. It was housed at the University of Central Florida, and at the time predicted a shortfall of 52,500 nurses by 2020 in Florida.

Last year, the shortage continued to magnify and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated that 1.1 million new nurses will be needed nationwide by 2022 to fill the gap. The shortage was expected to be felt in Florida by 2025.

State funding for the center was intermittent over the years, and was struck from the budget last year, prompting UCF to close it last July.

This year, the Legislature restored $800,000 in funding.

The timing couldnt be better with the existing shortage being compounded by nurses leaving the field due to the pandemic, said Charles Lockwood, vice president of USF Health.

University Of The State Of Florida

USF Health College of Nursing

In 1905, the Florida Legislature passed the Buckman Act, which consolidated the state’s publicly supported higher education institutions. The member of the legislature who wrote the act, Henry Holland Buckman, later became the namesake of Buckman Hall, one of the first buildings constructed on the new university’s campus. The Buckman Act organized the State University System of Florida and created the Florida Board of Control to govern the system. It also abolished the six pre-existing state-supported institutions of higher education, and consolidated the assets and academic programs of four of them to form the new “University of the State of Florida.” The four predecessor institutions consolidated to form the new university included the University of Florida at Lake City in Lake City, the East Florida Seminary in Gainesville, the St. Petersburg Normal and Industrial School in St. Petersburg, and the South Florida Military College in Bartow.

The Buckman Act also consolidated the colleges and schools into three institutions segregated by race and genderthe University of the State of Florida for white men, the Florida Female College for white women, and the State Normal School for Colored Students for African-American men and women.

In 1909, the school’s name was simplified from the “University of the State of Florida” to the “University of Florida.”

Nursing Students To Graduate From Accelerated Program At Usf Sarasota

SARASOTA, Fla. Students in an accelerated nursing program at the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee campus found themselves in a unique situation when they started a new program last year just before the pandemic began. Those students will now graduate in a matter of days and say theyre ready to join the front lines.

I come from a family of nurses: My aunt is a nurse. My mom went to school for nursing. My sister is a nurse. My cousin is a nurse, said Teren Culver.

Like her family, Culver found her fit in nursing.

We knew it wouldnt be an easy path because everything just kind of changed all at once, said Culver. It wasnt just a change for us. It was a change for our professors as well from the traditional program that they were used to.

Culver is part of the first cohort of 30 students from USFs accelerated nursing program on the Sarasota-Manatee campus that will graduate with the spring 2021 class. The program allows students with bachelors degrees to return to school to earn a nursing degree through an intensive 16-month period.

The program launched in January 2020, just before the pandemic started.

Weve had to find creative solutions, said Natasha Zurcher, the director for the accelerated pathway on the Sarasota-Manatee campus. Weve had to integrate simulation into some of their coursework in order to maintain the quality of the program and allow them to accumulate the hours needed for graduation.

For Zurcher, its a proud moment.
