The Demsn Program: Building A New Direct Path To Nursing In Nevada
Accepting non-traditional students into the UNLV School of Nursing is not a new concept. Older students or students who led previous careers have been present in nursing cohorts over the years, and in 2021, the School of Nursing launched its Nursing BS – Accelerated Second-Degree BSN Track for those with non-nursing degrees looking to try a different field.
However, UNLV Nursing is launching a new program that is set to make a unique mark in Nevada that could open more opportunities for students and help increase the nursing workforce in Southern Nevada. Its a generalist program designed to develop nurses from non-traditional backgrounds with experience in other fields. The Direct Entry – Generalist Master of Science in Nursing program, or DEMSN, accepts students with non-nursing bachelors degrees and teaches them how to be a nurse from introductory concepts and basic skills to having a general master of science in nursing degree. The expected first cohort is Fall 2023, with applications still open through July 1st, 2023.
Building a new academic program is far from easy. UNLV Nursing professors Angela Silvestri-Elmore and Jennifer Pfannes both worked extensively on bringing DEMSN to life for nearly a year. Silvestri-Elmore is also the Associate Dean for Entry and Pre-Licensure Education, and Jennifer Pfannes currently leads the traditional BSN program . They explain the motivations behind introducing this unique track and how it will enhance nursing education.

This degree completion program is for students with some college experience or who hold an associates or bachelors degree in any field other than nursing. A recent survey found that the nations hospitals turnover rate for nurses averaging 25.9%, and RN turnover rates topped those of hospitals for the first time in the surveys history. With hospital vacancy rates at all-time highs, programs like Avilas BSN are more critical than ever.
While interest in nursing programs remains high across the country, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing says that nationally more than 80,000 qualified applicants were turned away by colleges and universities due to shortages of clinical sites, faculty, and other resources.

For Yazmin Silva, earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from The University of Texas at Arlington is so important that she has been willing to make a six-hour, same-day roundtrip commute along the Texas border to complete her required clinical hours.
She does so while balancing single parenthood and a full-time job teaching high school Spanish. But Silva said the commitment to her future is worth the effort.
The program seemed like it worked for me, she said. I saw it as something that was very doable.
Every Saturday at 3 a.m., the senior nursing student hits the road in her 2017 Volkswagen to begin the 300-mile roundtrip from her home in Laredo to her clinical site at South Texas Health System McAllen. Her route along U.S. Route 83 loosely follows the Rio Grande along the Texas border.
At first, she made the trip over two days, driving on Friday night and spending the night in a hotel before working and driving home Saturday. But expenses added up quick. The debt that she worked so hard to clear before starting school was building back up, so she decided to fit her nursing shift and lengthy roundtrip into a single long day. She gets help at home thanks to her sister, who cares for Silvas 11-year- and 13-month-old daughters while Silva is away.

Parkview Health Indiana Tech And Huntington University Partner On New Accelerated Nursing Degree Program
Parkview Health, Indiana Tech and Huntington University have partnered to launch a new accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program to be taught by Huntington nursing faculty on Indiana Techs main campus in Fort Wayne. Parkview Health will provide clinical placements to students during the program, job placement upon successful program completion, and significant tuition support to qualifying students that will cover the cost of the program. The first classes in the program will begin in August 2023.
Students who have a bachelors degree in any field and have completed key pre-requisites can enroll in the full-time, in-person, accelerated program. In just 13 months, graduates can earn their bachelors degree in nursing and start their nursing career immediately. Key program details include:
Per the guidelines for the program established by the Indiana State Board of Nursing, the new accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program may admit up to 25 students for the first cohort that will begin in August 2023. The second class cohort will begin studies in January 2024, with new cohorts then beginning each August and January from that point forward.

Classes Not Applicable Toward Sonhs Degrees
The following courses do not count toward the 120 credits required of the BSN degree: DAN 101-104, ENG 103, and MTH 099. Based on their ENG or MTH placement scores, students may need to complete ENG 103 or MTH 099 before enrolling in higher-level requirements. Even though the courses listed above cannot count toward graduation, they can count toward the 12 credits required to be considered a full-time student.

About The Program Nursing Accelerated Option
The Accelerated Option program is designed for students who already have a bachelor’s degree or higher in a non-nursing field and wish to pursue a career in professional nursing. Our rapid-paced, high quality AO program is delivered over four semesters and begins in the spring each year. Small class sizes allow for more interaction between students and their professors throughout this rigorous course of study.

An Industry In Crisis
The nationwide K-12 teacher shortage is oft talked about but difficult to quantify due to a lack of data.
In Florida, however, the data is more clear.
Using figures from the 2021-22 school year, researchers from Brown University, the University of Illinois, and Kansas State University found nearly 4,000 vacant teaching positions in the Sunshine State, which is the highest number in the country. An additional 16,500 positions are listed as “underqualified.”
Brown University also found that pundits shouldn’t paint the teacher shortage issue with a broad brush. Instead, vacancy rates can vary wildly between different communities, according to a 2022 study.
Jasmine Calin-Micek, director of programming for TAP, told BestColleges that a conservative estimate of the issue in Miami-Dade County says approximately 200 positions are unfilled.
Concurrently, higher education hasn’t been a reliable pipeline for creating new teachers.
Dr. Laura Kohn-Wood, professor and dean of the School of Education and Human Development at UM, told BestColleges that enrollments into schools of education have declined, going back many years.
“Deans of these schools have been talking about this for quite some time,” she said.

Finding An Innovative Solution
With fewer students graduating from traditional education major programs, the core team at TAP thought to look outside of this boundary.
Kohn-Wood said all UM students are getting a robust higher education experience before their senior year, albeit in things like history, music, and marine science. TAP’s job is to show them how a start in public education could be a stepping stone in their career path or a new way altogether to continue exploring the subjects that interest them.
“We’re just having a different conversation about where your purpose and passion can be expressed,” she said.
This tactic does, however, mean students are entering a teaching career from a very different level than traditional education majors. With that in mind, Calin-Micek said TAP uses the summer internship period as a lower-stakes environment for recent graduates to “get their feet wet.”
During this period, TAP enrollees are paired with a mentor to teach them the ropes. Achieve Miami and Teach for America will continue to train TAP enrollees throughout their first year.
” mindful of the fact that students are either coming from a new career or ⦠coming from a different major,” Calin-Micek said. “Your connection to education is through a one-semester course, not four years of study.”
Miller Saiontz said TAP’s first-year goal is to have 50 new educators enter Miami-Dade County schools this fall.

Nursing Students Gain Health Care Experience Abroad
When Jerusha Jean walked into a hospital room at the Hospital Universitario Quirónsalud Madrid, she found a patient crying, awaiting a doctors visit. Gently putting her hand on the patients shoulder, Jean offered consolation. Despite the language barrier, the Spanish patient understood her sentiment and reciprocated with a calming touch.
In that moment, Jean, a senior studying nursing at the University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies, felt a reinvigorated passion for providing care for others.
Interacting with the patients on that level confirmed that I was in the right profession. I had more of a sense of appreciation and pride to say, Im in the field of nursing after this program, she said.
In the beginning of January, 20 seniors in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program spent two weeks in Madrid, Spain, as guests of the Universidad Francisco de Vitoria.
The students were enrolled in the elective Global Health: Transcultural Nursing, an immersive experience in an international setting that is followed by online activities and face-to-face meetings.
The intensive 14-day curriculum allowed students to observe nursing care in several units at the Hospital Universitario del Sureste and Hospital Universitario Quirónsalud Madrid, including wound care, endoscopy, emergency medicine, pediatrics, internal medicine, surgery, pulmonology, and endocrinology.
