Nurses In Training At Treasure Valley Community College In Ontario Ready To Take On Covid

Jill Humble, the executive director of nursing and allied health at Treasure Valley Community College.

ONTARIO Nurses in training at Treasure Valley Community College have an intense schedule with 720 hours of clinicals, or on-site training, over the course of two years in addition to their classroom study.

Students and teachers in recent interviews were confident that despite, or perhaps because of, the exhausting nature of the program, graduates enter the workforce well-prepared to deal with the special conditions created by the Covid pandemic.

I dont think you can really ever appreciate it until youre actually in it, said Stephanie Hillman, a registered nurse at Saint Alphonsus Medical Center in Nampa who graduated from the program in the spring. Everyone says its so stressful and its pretty hard, and you’re like Oh, I could do it, and then youre in it and its kind of the constant panic and anxiety of getting through it.

Those feelings dont last forever, though, she said.

When the pandemic began in early 2020, Hillmans cohort missed a quarter in the facilities where they were doing their clinicals as the medical world scrambled to regain equilibrium. The following quarter, clinicals resumed, but Hillman and her classmates were not allowed to work with Covid patients for public health reasons.

Itll prepare them even better, she said.

If anything, we really had to learn to be flexible, said Kyle Spurling.

ONTARIO The director of Treasure Valley Community Colleges nursing program and three other nursing facility members submitted their letters of resignation in the past couple of weeks, Abby Lee, TVCCs public information officer, confirmed in a news release Friday. Officials are working to maintain the schools program.

Lee said the college does not comment on its employee reasons for leaving a position, adding the faculty vacancies, along with higher accreditation requirements has created more stress and demands for many nursing programs and instructors statewide.

TVCC has been recruiting to fill one nursing faculty position vacant for more than a year, Lee continued, and finding masters level nursing to fill these critical instruction positions is difficult not only for TVCC but community colleges across the state and the nation.

Nursing pay in the private sector is significantly more than that of college faculty at TVCC under its employee contract, making it more difficult difficult to recruit nursing instructors.

Although we do not welcome this challenge, and certainly werent expecting this kind of turn-over, it does create an opportunity for TVCC to review the existing process and to identify areas of improvement of enhancement, said David Koehler, TVCC Dean of Career & Technical Education, whose division oversees the nursing department, in the news release.
