Doctor Of Nursing Practice
There are two DNP tracks for students who have completed their master’s degree: the DNP Clinical Expert track and the DNP Nurse Executive track.
The post-master’s DNP pathway has full-time and part-time study options. Students must have completed 500 master’s-level clinical hours and hold an advanced certification or be eligible to sit for certification by the first day they enter the program. It is not required to hold a certification as an APRN for admission to the Nurse Executive track.
The College of Nursing offers a five-year, part-time DNP pathway for students entering with a BSN. In the BSN to DNP pathway, students will earn the MSN during the first three years of study, then become certified as an APRN. The final two years focus on leadership and clinical skills by completing the DNP Clinical Expert coursework and immersion experience.

Member Spotlight: The Ohio State University College Of Nursing
Tracing itsroots to 1914, the Ohio State University College of Nursing became part of OSUin 1922, its own distinct school within OSU in 1928 and an autonomous collegein 1984. Today, the college has a $14.1 million budget to support more than 120faculty and staff and 1,487 students. The college’s mission is to transformhealth and transform lives through innovative academic programs, cutting-edgeresearch that improves outcomes and evidence-based clinical practice.
BernadetteMazurek Melnyk, PhD, RN, is the dean of the College of Nursing, but that’s hardly her only role at Ohio State. She’s also the university’s chief wellness officer and its associate vice president for health promotion. All of it adds up to a busy woman.
“Every day is very exciting, and I never have the opportunity to be bored,” Melnyk said with a laugh.
She is a big believer in the evidence-based practice that shows up in the college’s curriculum. “We start from the foundation, from the day enter their programs,” Melnyk said. In her role as the university’s chief wellness officer, she spearheads the implementation of evidence-based health and wellness initiatives across the university. But, she said, unless these best practices are actually implemented in the clinical or real-world setting, they are of little use. Ensuring that happens requires continuous effort and reinforcement.
“So that has huge cost implications,” Melnyk said.

A new study from The Ohio State University College of Nursing quantifies how the COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with variable workplace wellness cultures and long shifts caring for patients, has severely impacted nurses working on the front lines.
The study was published online ahead-of-print in Nursing Administration Quarterly.
Clinician burnout and mental health problems were an epidemic in nurses and other healthcare clinicians even before the pandemic hit COVID-19 exacerbated the problem, said Bernadette Melnyk, PhD, APRN-CNP, FAANP, FNAP, FAAN, vice president for health promotion, university chief wellness officer and dean of the College of Nursing, who also served as lead author on this study. What this study did is shed light on the current scope of the problem and how healthcare systems can fix system issues known to cause clinician burnout and invest in evidence-based strategies and resources to help clinicians live healthier lives.
Melnyk and her team surveyed 264 nurses associated with Trusted Health, which places travel nurses at hospitals and healthcare systems across the country, between August October 2020. Among the key findings:

Why Mobile Devices
The College of Nursing requires all undergraduate students and Graduate Entry students to have mobile devices by the beginning of Autumn semester as part of their requirements for the program. Having a mobile device puts a wealth of evidence based information at your fingertips including, a drug database, lab and diagnostic tests information, information about medical conditions, calculators and formula references, and more. The mobile device is more than just a static reference tool though, the materials update regularly, giving you current information on topics like warnings from the FDA, drug costs, and new dosage recommendations and once you are comfortable with using your device, you will spend less time looking up information that you would looking it up in a book, not to mention it weighs a lot less.
