How Do I Know If My Loved One Needs Skilled Care Or Assisted Living
Assisted living is appropriate for individuals unable to live on their own anymore, but don’t require daily care. This level of care provides meals, light housekeeping, laundry, assistance with bathing, and 24-hour CNA staff for emergency needs.
Skilled nursing caters to those individuals whose conditions have declined to the point where they need daily physical and clinical attention beyond what an assisted living facility would offer.

Nursing Home Profits Over Patients
Elderly care is a complex and delicate issue. We are dealing with one of the most vulnerable sections of the population some would argue than even more so than children. So how are non- and for-profit facilities dealing with mounting costs and infamous mishaps, ranging from filthy conditions to negligent deaths?
There is a need for 24/7 specialized attention, which can become quite expensive, depending on the extent of every individual requirement. For-profit nursing homes claim to deal with scant resources, with many stating meager or non-existent earnings. This allegation has been used to explain chronic staff shortage, among other shortcomings. Medicare and Medicaid funds channeled into nursing homes have been increasingly redirected towards multi-million expenses, and most of the time, the recipients of these expenditures are subsidiaries of the same corporation running the centers.
Research conducted by the University of Illinois at Chicago highlighted an increase in for-profit nursing home earnings, with quality of service diminishing simultaneously. The researchers, who were led by Lee Friedman of UICs School of Public Health, concluded that patients receiving care in for-profit institutions were diagnosed with substantially more clinical signs of neglect than patients residing in not-for-profit facilities. This trend appears to be worsening over time, raising concerns within officials and organizations in charge of regulating elderly care services.
Will Medicare Pay For A Subacute Rehabilitation Stay
Medicare requires certain criteria be met for an eligible beneficiary to receive skilled nursing benefits. The beneficiary must have an inpatient hospital 3 midnight stay, medical necessity must be certified by the hospital attending physician, and the skilled care must be related to the condition for which the beneficiary was hospitalized.
Medicare DOES NOT pay for custodial or intermediate care in a nursing home, even if it is a Medicare certified facility. Medicares nursing home coverage is limited to medically necessary skilled nursing and rehabilitation care following a hospital stay.

I liked the tour of this community. The marketing person was nice and honest. They accept medicaid but will not help with the application. It was a nice and clean place. They helped with all my questions.
This was very expensive. It was a lot of money for a shared room, and something that looks like an institution. We had some rehab here, but decided we didn’t want a long term stay.
