College Of Saint Benedict And Saint Johns University Create Three New Graduate Nursing Programs
Following extensive market analysis, the College of Saint Benedict, in partnership with Saint Johns University, introduced two new Doctor of Nursing Practice programs this fall and will launch a Master of Science in Nursing program in 2022.
The Doctor of Nursing Practice – Family Nurse Practitioner track offers students an opportunity to prepare for one of the most in-demand nursing jobs in Minnesota. When we were examining where the current job openings were, there were approximately 300 open positions for family nurse practitioners in Minnesota daily, said Jennifer Peterson, assistant professor of nursing and chair of the graduate nursing program, College of Saint Benedict. I still actively practice as a family nurse practitioner, and I see the impact of some of the staffing shortages that were having. More patients are coming into clinics, we have less staff to see those patients, and we have more positions in rural areas that arent attracting providers. Nurse practitioners can help meet those needs.
The research revealed additional areas of demand for nurses. First, clinical partners said that they needed more nurse leaders with advanced degrees. In addition, there is a nationwide shortage of nursing faculty, and as current faculty retire the number of vacant faculty positions may grow.

Describe A Day In Your Life
It usually is a combination of teaching, clinical practice, and participation in professional nursing organizations. Often the day starts with Zoom meetings with students or academic colleagues. I am currently faculty curriculum lead for telehealth for a large HRSA ANEW grant so I am often involved in coordinating, mentoring faculty, and developing telehealth simulations, then checking my clinical practice email and electronic inbox to follow-up on patients.
I participate weekly in professional meetings such as lobbying, professional networking, and governance activities. I also connect with students or develop learning content. I try to make sure I get in some time for swimming and daily mindfulness practice.

I cannot say enough about the amazing education I received for my undergraduate degree at The College of Saint Scholastica. As an aspiring healthcare worker, this was the perfect location to do my schooling. I felt well prepared moving onto graduate studies and while working at Essentia Health as well. Class sizes are smaller, but the professors are incredible and very knowledgable. Food options are getting better as time goes on as well.

The College of Saint Scholastica is an amazing college! As a non-traditional student that takes classes off campus, the college does things to make sure I know what is going on. There are emails often and my adviser Renee keeps in touch to make sure things are going well in my program. I am thankful for the opportunity to obtain my masters degree in a convenient location. I have classes every Thursday night in Hibbing, MN. The instructors are wonderful and really listen to our feedback and tailor the class to our needs. If they do not have an answer, they get answers usually within 24 hours. I am looking forward to the next 12 months of classes and finishing up my degree. My future is bright and I have St. Scholastica and the awesome staff to thank.

This college so far has helped me grow so much in the short time that I have been here. Everyone is so outgoing and helpful and so are the teachers as well. Everyone gets to know each other as this is a smaller school but it feels more like home. I love it here!

Statement Of Need And Purpose
Advance practice provider training programs rely on high quality graduate clinical preceptors to provide real-world clinical experiences and socialize students to the role of the APP. Nurse practitioner, physician assistant, and physician training programs often do not include preceptor development. Many graduate clinical preceptors have never received formal preceptor training and feel deficient in their ability to set goals, create an adequate learning environment, provide feedback, and evaluate student performance in a busy clinic setting.
The purpose of this workshop is to prepare high quality graduate clinical preceptors to provide real-world clinical experiences and socialize students to the role of physician, physician associate, or advanced practice registered nurse. The workshop focuses on skills that graduate clinical preceptors need to serve as preceptors in with short lectures and active learning, small group discussions. The topics include time management, critical thinking, providing evaluation and feedback, assessing learner styles, motivation, working with the challenging student and precepting in telemedicine. The content is geared toward an interprofessional group and will address precepting strategies for a variety of settings, including inpatient and clinic.
