St. John Fisher College Launches the Golisano Institute for Developmental Disability Nursing

As a transfer student, you must take an introductory ethics or bioethics course, such as PHIL 124C, PHIL 250C, REST 130, 284D, or 387D. Before beginning the clinical year as a junior, you must earn a “C” or higher in each of the required Nursing prerequisite courses and a prerequisite GPA of 2.4 or higher including all attempts at these seven courses: Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Nutrition, Statistics, and Development Across the Lifespan. Unless you hold a baccalaureate or higher degree in another field, you must meet Core Requirements to fulfill graduation requirements for a B.S. in nursing.

All Nurse Practitioner Programs

Nurses who hold a master’s degree in nursing or a non-clinical master’s degree and wish to become a nurse practitioner in an area of specialty may be eligible to obtain a post master’s certification as a nurse practitioner. The post-master’s program requires the student to complete coursework in the chosen nurse practitioner program.

Students who have already completed a master’s program in nursing may be eligible for course waivers at the discretion of the chair. All students entering the post-master’s APRN certificate program will have a gap analysis performed to determine their individual plans of study.

Upon completion of this variable-credit program, the nurse will be eligible for certification in the selected NP role in New York state and national professional NP certification.

Admission To The Masters Of Science Fnp Nursing Program

Admission requirements for the graduate program have been developed after benchmarking with other graduate nursing programs and considering both the academic requirements in the program as well as the professional demands in the role. All graduate students will be required to apply to the College, providing transcripts from all previous coursework. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited nursing program or an international equivalent is required. Transcripts from foreign institutions must be evaluated for transfer equivalency credits by an accredited evaluation service, such as the World Education Services . An overall GPA of 3.00 in all previous graduate/undergraduate work is required. Applicants must have an unencumbered New York state license and current registration as a registered professional nurse. Recent work experience as a registered nurse is preferred and required before graduation. Curriculum Vitae and supporting documents are required. Two letters of recommendation addressing both academic and professional ability must be submitted for consideration. A written personal statement about professional goals is required. All applicants must submit official scores from the GRE general test taken within the last five years. An interview may be required of applicants to assess professional demeanor, motivation and capacity for graduate education. All health/technical standards must be met .

Traditional Nursing BS Program

St. John Fisher College offers a traditional nursing program that leads to a Bachelor of Science in nursing. This program is for students who are directly out of high school or older students without any college courses. The advantage of attending St. John Fisher College is that in the first two years at the college, students follow the undergraduate Nursing curriculum. This involves completing the college core courses and prerequisite liberal arts and science courses. Students also participate in non-credit nursing seminars. Since the first two years do not include clinical practice in medical settings, students in the nursing program are free to pursue trips abroad and special outreach programs at St. John Fisher. Groups of nursing students and some of the nursing teaching staff take part in projects, such as going to Kenya to provide immunizations and basic health care.

Accelerated Opportunity: Bs To Ms Option

Current undergraduate nursing students at St. John Fisher College may petition to complete graduate-level coursework during their senior year of undergraduate study. This offers an accelerated approach for qualified traditional baccalaureate students who wish to pursue graduate study at the Wegmans School of Nursing. The accelerated option allows specific graduate-level courses to be taken during the senior year. Students may take advantage of one or both accelerated options.

Note:Approval to take graduate courses does not guarantee admission to the M.S. programs.
