Registered nurses with a bachelor’s degree in a discipline other than nursing may apply to the Graduate Nursing Program. Applicants should contact the School of Nursing for application to this program. Once conditionally admitted into the program, the student completes NURS 508, Clinical Practice Transitions. A grade of B or better must be attained in this course to progress into the Graduate Nursing Program. The course may be repeated once. If a grade of B or better is not attained after the second attempt, the student is not able to matriculate into the Graduate Nursing Program.

A portfolio to demonstrate nursing competencies is completed in NURS 508. The purpose of this portfolio is to demonstrate that the conditionally admitted student has mastered the same material as a graduate from Spalding University’s Undergraduate Nursing Program. Proficiency is demonstrated through one’s clinical background, previous formal learning, and life experiences. Guidelines for the portfolio are available from the director of the graduate program. Applicants can initiate portfolio development independently prior enrolling in NURS 508. However, the portfolio is not evaluated until the applicant is enrolled in NURS 508.

Upon successful completion of NURS 508, students may select the Nurse Educator or Nurse Practitioner track.

Spalding University Stands Out For Face

About Avanti

As Spalding University adjunct lecturer Collan Darnall taught a recent nursing procedures lab for masters students, he was demonstrating points about treating lacerations that required careful explanation.

He taught the five students in the classroom how to prep and clean different cuts. He explained the options of numbing medications and their dosages. He reviewed methods for suturing.

The students asked quick questions throughout, and Darnall answered them immediately. If they needed him to repeat something, he did so, including making an occasional joke that made the students chuckle and stay engaged.

And when the students practiced suturing on pieces of soft leather, Darnall walked around the classroom to check how everyone was doing.

The teacher-student interactions in the Spalding lab that day accentuated the benefits of a traditional classroom setting for nurse-practitioner students.

In an age when online nursing programs are ubiquitous, Spaldings master of science in nursing is a program still rooted in the face-to-face approach to teaching, and Spaldings future nurse practitioners say that makes all the difference.

MSN student Danielle Lunsford said those face-to-face relationships mean students at the downtown Louisville campus are held accountableby the instructors who have gotten to know them so well.

That is huge, Sisic said. We have full-time school, full-time work and full-time families.

Rural Healthcare Workforce Shortage Solutions With Online Education

Rural communities have less access to postsecondary education meaning physicians and nurse practitioners must travel elsewhere to get training before returning to their hometowns with a diploma and enhanced skills in medicine.

Louisville, KY, USA, Feb. 14, 2022 —

There were shortages in nursing, primary care providers, and almost every facet of healthcare before the COVID-19 pandemic started and that gap has only widened in the past 2 years. The impact is most critical in rural communities where the shortage of access to healthcare remains the highest.

Rural communities have less access to postsecondary education meaning physicians and nurse practitioners must travel elsewhere to get training before returning to their hometowns with a diploma and enhanced skills in medicine.

One solution to this problem is to broaden access to programs that train primary care providers through online learning. Spalding University has done just that, by adding in a new online program for Master of Science in Nursing Family Nurse Practitioner. This program was announced in December 2021 and will start its first students in August 2022.

Student nurses of this program can work full-time while also completing the curriculum to advance their skills and knowledge. These students are aided in finding local clinical placements and also get to attend campus residences in Louisville, Kentucky over the 3-year program.
