Pros & Cons Of Becoming A Rn With An Adn

One of the highlights of becoming a registered nurse with an associates degree in nursing is that you are able to obtain a degree that qualifies you to take the NCLEX in a shorter amount of time than if they were to go for a BSN degree. An ADN degree takes two years of study to complete, whereas a BSN degree will take four-years to complete.

Along with the shorter amount of time to obtain an ADN, this also allows RNs to get practical experience by entering the workforce sooner than if they were to go for their BSN degree from the start of their undergraduate education. Beginning a career in any nursing field will allow you to get hands-on experience and will allow you to begin making more money that can aid in future schooling expenses, if you decide to pursue your BSN.

A downside to only completing an RN associates degree in nursing is that many employers are looking for nurses who have their BSN degree since it is a higher level of education. A BSN degree allows individuals to have more training within the specialty field they are looking to work in, as well as gives employers the peace of mind that their employee fully understands what is required of them to give optimal care to their patients.

Is Returning To School For A Bachelor’s Degree In Nursing Beneficial

Those with an RN who are considering the value in getting their BS should understand its current value and importance. Here are a few reasons why you might consider an RN to BSN program:

  • Magnet hospitals. As more hospitals seek magnet destinations to attract and signify to patients that their facility provides quality healthcare, many RNs are being asked to return to school to earn their degrees as a BS. Earning your BS may make you more marketable to desired facilities that seek interest in those with quality training and education from a BS.
  • AACN Endorsement. The national voice for academic nursing education is the American Association of Colleges of Nursing . A statement was published in 1996 that endorsed the baccalaureate degree as the minimal preparation for professional practice.
  • Additional nursing career opportunities. Having your BS degree may open new career opportunities. Management roles, specialty positions, and other nursing positions typically require applications to hold a BS. Recognizing the value of a more educated nursing staff, many institutions now require their nurses to hold a Bachelors of Science in Nursing.
  • Opportunity for Graduate education. Think proactively and envision your future in nursing. Earning your BS degree will place you one step closer to pursuing an advanced role such as a nurse educator, nurse practitioner, nurse anesthetist, nurse midwife, nurse researcher, or clinical nurse specialist.

    Why Earn Your Bs Now

Healthcare in the US has become increasingly complex with many nurses stepping into leadership positions. Many hospitals are making it a policy to require every nurse to have a minimum of a BS, or at least an agreement to pursue that degree within a period of time.

The current nursing environment is becoming more competitive, meaning that earning a BS is now more crucial for nurses than ever before.

With the current nursing shortage and complex environments, the need for qualified nurses has increased.

Roberts Wesleyan University designed their RN to BS program to meet the full needs of an adult learner who is already a registered nurse. This program is focused on bringing students the convenience and flexibility to continue with any current nursing and life responsibilities, all while pursuing their BS. Students have access to support, tools, and technology needed to successfully complete their nursing degree.
