Pmhnp Salary And Job Outlook
Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners are one of the highest-paying nurse practitioner specialties because they are a highly-specialized field.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Mental Health Nurse Practitioners make a mean annual salary of $126,200 with an average hourly wage of $60.67 as of May 2021.
Although most NPs work full-time, salaries will also vary based on the type of occupation, hours, and the state and city.
Nurse Practitioners, in general, have a higher-than-average job outlook and because psychiatric nursing is a field that is still growing in interest and awareness, its reasonable to expect that wages are going to gradually climb over the coming years.
Finding The Online Psychiatric Np Program For You
Nurses who are interested in entering the psychiatric area of the field should examine their professional and educational goals before enrolling in a program. In addition, they should consider what learning environment will work best. For example, students who like to work independently may prefer a program conducted mostly online, while those who prefer to have some classroom interaction with instructors and peers may perform better in a partially online program.

Get To Know Julie Bremer
Bremer is one semester away from earning a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner degree from CU this December. She has been a practicing registered nurse at Gunnison Valley Health in Gunnison County since 2005. In a rural hospital with only 24 beds, Bremer gets to care for people in all areas of the hospital including medical/surgical, utilization review, labor and delivery and postpartum. Thats where she found more and more patients struggling with mental illness including perinatal mood and anxiety disorders during pregnancy and the first year after delivery. As many as 1 in 7 moms and 1 in 10 dads experience depression and anxiety during postpartum. Bremer had been one of them.
I faced postpartum depression with my second daughter. I had little help at the time and didnt know that postpartum support groups existed. I sought out therapy, which did help, but wish I knew then what I know now about treatment, says Bremer.

To complement our Best of 2021 rankings above, weve profiled two other accredited online psychiatric nurse practitioner programs that are also worth a look in your school search. Weve laid out all the details, from admissions requirements to curriculum information and program costs.
Vanderbilt University
The psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner program at Vanderbilt University allows students at different educational levels the training to provide holistic mental health treatments. Registered nurses with a masters or bachelors degree can enroll in this program, as well as registered nurses with an associates degree or diploma, and those who are beginning their nursing education with no prior experience. As a result, students can get an education that is tailored to their previous experience.
No matter where they are educationally when starting the program, Vanderbilt University students take coursework that familiarizes them with the realities of working as a mental health nurse practitioner. The schools curriculum covers psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, clinical reasoning, and pathophysiology. In addition, students participate in clinical education so they get the advanced hands-on training they need to work in a mental health environment. Students in this phase of the program may be placed in prison systems, inpatient psychiatric units, community mental health centers, or outpatient private practices.

Seeing Postpartum Depression First
Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders are one of the most common and least diagnosed complications in obstetrics. Once mothers have babies, they are often left alone to deal with the mental health issues that come with that major change of life. I felt the huge need for mental health care in this area.
Only years later as a nurse working in Gunnison, did Bremer learn there is an organization called Postpartum Support International that offers services and support. She is now a member of PSI and has been volunteering weekly on the peer support helpline for 2.5 years.
Bremer also educates others about suicide prevention through safeTALK because over the last few years, several people she knew took their own lives. Colorado and the intermountain region have the highest suicide rate in the nation. In 2019 alone, 1,287 Coloradans lost their lives. Thats not only higher than any year before, its also the highest number of suicides ever recorded in the state, according to the Colorado Health Institute.
