Why Do I Need A Psychiatric Mental Health Certification
For nurses, obtaining certification may be required for a position in a mental health facility or department. Certification in this specialty demonstrates that the nurse is highly competent in caring for patients needing mental health services, and are experts in the field. Certification also serves as a professional accomplishment for nurses.
For nurse practitioners, certification is usually required for licensure as an APRN. Completing a specialty track in mental health is one thing, but NP graduates must still complete the exam for certification. It is also required for a position as a mental health provider.
Lifespan Psychiatric Mental Health
Apply knowledge of advanced health assessment, psychopathophysiology, psychopharmacotherapeutics, and psychotherapeutic modalities in clinical settings. Focus on children, adolescents, adults, older adults, and families. Learn differential diagnoses and treatment plans that include genetic, age, gender, and cultural influences, as well as laboratory findings and diagnostic studies. Certification requirements for Psychiatric-Mental Health NPs are as follows:
- Current, active RN license or international equivalent

Who is it right for? Those with anon-nursing bachelors degree
Many graduate nursing programs also allow you to enroll directly if you have your RN license and a bachelors in a non-nursing-related field.

This concentration provides graduates with advanced knowledge and skills to assume the role of a PMHNP. Assessment, diagnosis and treatment of adults, children and families across the lifespan with psychiatric mental health needs are the foci of the concentration. This concentration is offered as a Post Graduate Certificate of BSN-DNP.
The PMHNP Post Graduate Certificate requires a total of 22 credit hours and a 3-credit core course in Advanced Caring Science. The program of study is offered online. The curriculum contains a total of 600 hours of required clinical practice. Attainment of competencies may require more than 600 hours. Clinical placements may occur in acute care settings, private practice offices, substance treatment centers, community-based health centers, and other settings providing mental health care.
Graduates of the program are eligible for the Psychiatric Mental health Nurse Practitioner Certification Examination offered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center and the American Holistic Nursing Credentialing Corporation Advanced Holistic Nursing examination.
The application deadline for the Post Graduate certificate option for the fall 2022 cohort is February 15, 2022 and the application deadline for the BSN to DNP program is February 1, 2022 for summer applications.

Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners provide a full range of primary mental health care services, including biopsychosocial assessment and diagnosis of patients with mental illness and co-occurring disorders. Treatment modalities include both medication and psychotherapeutic management. PMHNPs work in a variety of settings, including inpatient, emergency and community-based mental health services. Our students are provided the opportunity to complete clinical placements across the Bay Area, which have included: Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, UCSF Langley Porter Psychiatric Hospital and Clinics, the VA, San Francisco Department of Public Health, Sutter Health, Palo Alto Medical Foundation, and Marin County Mental Health Services.

What Will I Learn In A Post
The Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Post-Masters certificate program prepares nurses to provide effective care for patients with complex psychiatric and physical health needs. PMHNPs work with individuals and families to develop a diagnosis and then design, implement and monitor a plan of care. Responsibilities can also include prescribing medication and administering psychotherapy.
This program is offered fully online, and requires students to attend a two-day virtual, synchronous program intensive to network with cohort members, meet faculty and personally experience the high-quality culture and competence of the University of Cincinnati. The Post-Masters Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program is not eligible for federal financial aid.

Post Graduate Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Option
Applicants holding an earned Master of Science degree in Nursing from an accredited nursing program and who meet all MSN admission requirements and have successfully completed Advanced Health Assessment, Advanced Pharmacology and Advanced Pathophysiology may seek specialization as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner by applying for a Post Graduate Certificate . PGC applicants may be considered for a fall admission.
Once applicant has been accepted into a concentration, a gap analysis will be completed to determine the required courses for each student. PGC programs require a minimum of 10 credits for FAU MSN graduates a minimum of 13 credits is required for applicants from other institutions. Students must provide syllabi and/or course descriptions from other institutions for all transfer courses.

Psychiatric/mental Health Nurse Practitioner Certificate
The Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Certificate program prepares nurses to diagnose and treat common mental health conditions.
The 24-credit-hour Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Certificate prepares advanced practice nurses to diagnose and treat common mental health conditions in general medical settings and to deliver more effective psychiatric care in mental health settings. Students are prepared to apply knowledge and skills in interpersonal, psychotherapeutic and psychopharmacologic interventions for individuals, groups and families with psychiatric disorders.
The PHMNP Certificate program requires that students have completed an advanced practice registered nurse graduate educational program from a nationally accredited school of nursing. Three separate, comprehensive graduate-level courses in advanced pathophysiology, advanced health assessment and advanced pharmacology are required. Applicants will also have completed course content in health promotion and/or maintenance.
All required certificate courses are web-based and are offered in sequence every other year. Spring 2024 will begin the next available course sequence. The application deadline is Nov. 1, 2023.
