Faq: Are There Any Online Post

Answer: Yes! There are many online adult-gerontology nurse practitioner post-masters certificate programs available from high-quality, accredited institutions.

Post-masters certificates are designed for registered nurses or advanced practice registered nurses who currently hold a masters of science in nursing or higher and are looking to specialize in the acute or primary care of individuals ranging from adolescence to advanced age. Students in this field can complete a certificate program in one to four years.

The role of an AGNP depends on the sub-specialization in which the RN gains mastery. Adult-gerontology acute care nurse practitioners specialize in diagnosing and treating acutely ill patients, often in inpatient settings. Through monitoring, diagnosis, medication, and referral, the central goal for an AGNP-AC is to make sure sick patients recover as quickly as possible, avoid complications from the illness, and in the case of serious illness, receive the appropriate palliative care.

Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

Note On Field Experience And Relocating

Students who are considering relocating are advised to contact their student success advisor prior to any decision to relocate in order to determine how relocation may impact progress in their program. Advisors can provide information and guidance on how relocating may result in possible changes, restrictions, and/or additional requirements affecting field experience. Each Board of Nursing and Higher Education Authority governs the field experience rules and regulations in their respective states, and students may be unable to complete field experience in the state in which they plan to relocate. What Is A Post

A post-master’s certificate is a pathway for nurses who have earned a master’s degree to gain specialized knowledge. This affords nurses more opportunity and career growth. Post-master’s certificates add another year or two of graduate study and are usually more specialized. Additionally, post-master’s certificates allow nurses with a master’s degree to become certified in niche specialties.

Nurses may also “cross over” to a different specialty than what they focused on in their original MSN program via a post-master’s certificate. For example, a nurse practitioner with an adult-gerontology specialty can become certified in family medicine. Sometimes the core courses they completed in their original master’s program can be applied towards the certificate program.

How To Choose An Online Post

Adult/Gerontological Acute Care, Nurse Practitioner, Post ...

If youre like many nurses, you plan to continue working as you pursue your AGNP post-graduate certificate. Choosing an online program that doesnt require on-site visits to the college campus is likely to fulfill your needs. Its a good idea to make sure the online AGNP post-masters certificate program you choose is properly accredited.

Prospective students should also decide whether they want to pursue an Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner certificate or an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner certificate. Both options are regularly available at the post-masters certificate level.

While you might think that a shorter course is best because it allows you to put your certificate to use more quickly, ensure that it meets the requirements that are necessary for licensure and/or certification. Another consideration is figuring out how the program handles the clinical experience. Will you need to find your own facility or does the program have contracts with clinics or hospitals in your area, for example?

Students who hold a nurse practitioner certification without gerontology and wish to obtain gerontology certification will be required to complete an additional 4 semester hour clinical practicum course with a local preceptor in SARA participating states.

    Agacnp Certification & Career

Graduates of the AGACNP Certificate program meet criteria to take certification exams for AGACNP. The market for these advanced practice nurses continues to expand because of the aging population, changes that limit the hours of medical residents and the need for specialty care providers. Often, students are hired in an area in which they completed practicum experience.

Aspiring nurse practitioners who want to work in non-acute care settings should instead explore the Adult-Gerontology Primary Care specialty.

    Length Of An Online Post

The time required to complete an online post-MSN AGNP certificate varies widely depending on the program and the previous academic experience of the APRN applying. Generally, AGNP certificate programs comprise core nursing courses and specialty AGNP courses. These programs take anywhere from one to four years, depending on whether a student is full- or part-time, as well as their previous coursework completed.

Some programs are static and requirements are the same for every student, while others are customized around a students knowledge and experience. In individualized certificate course plans, students who have already earned an MSN may transfer previous core credits. The more overlap between the applicants previous MSN courses and the post-masters coursework, the shorter the time to completion will be.

Another factor in the amount of time it takes to complete an online post-MSN AGNP certificate program is whether a student chooses to study part- or full-time. Students choosing to study full-time will finish the program in a shorter timeline than part-time students. Part-time study will take longer but could be a better option for those who wish to continue working full-time. Students who choose full-time study can expect to complete a post-masters AGNP certificate in one to two years. Part-time students may take two to four years.

Why Should I Pursue A Post

There are several reasons why a master’s-prepared nurse would pursue a post-master’s certificate. As mentioned earlier, nurse practitioners may wish to change specialties, or enhance their current practice. For example, a primary care nurse practitioner may want to become certified in acute care. A family practice nurse practitioner may wish to pursue a mental health certificate. Adding expertise in a clinical specialty helps to increase job prospects as well as provide high-quality care in current practice.

Nurses who hold a master’s degree in nursing may also wish to pursue more administrative or educational roles. For example, master’s-prepared nurses who work as clinical nurse specialists may want to earn certification in education to enhance their practice and expand their career mobility. Nurses with an MSN in nurse leadership may choose a certificate program in informatics, which would help them participate in designing and implementing innovative technology to improve patient care outcomes. Essentially, a post-master’s certificate broadens a nurse’s knowledge base and can help open more doors in their careers.
