In a recent class at Webster University, nursing anesthesia doctoral students learned how to use ultrasound to assess trauma patients. The simulated patient appeared on an interactive touchscreen where assistant professor Nicholas Curdt manipulated the image to peel back layers of skin and muscle to investigate injured organs.

Websters new college of science and health will hold classes in high-tech Browning Hall, which opened in 2017, for graduate programs like nursing anesthesia and undergraduate programs including nursing and exercise science.

St. Louis Community College has grown to 557 nursing students this semester from 463 students in 2020. Programs in respiratory therapy, surgical tech and ultrasound have seen double-digit increases in enrollment rates.

I think what were seeing here is the pandemic has shined a light on the opportunities that are available in health care, said William Hubble, the colleges district dean of academic affairs-health science. People are looking for ways to move into the profession, and community college is a very affordable way to do that.

The average age of nursing students at the college is 28 or 29, Hubble said.

The majority are people that are already working in other industries and are looking for an opportunity to progress, Hubble said. St. Louis Community College is a major provider of employees to our area hospitals.

The Early History Of Nursing Schools In St Louis

A total of 24 training schools for nurses were established in Missouri during the latter decades of the 19th century. In addition to the 15 St. Louis schools listed below, 7 were founded in Kansas City and 2 in St. Joseph. By 1911, 47 nurse training schools were operating in Missouri, including 2 collegiate schools of nursing . By 1921 the establishment of regulatory laws and standards both diminished the rate of increase of new schools and caused some schools, whose foundations were not substantial, to close. The economic pressures of the Depression further reduced the number of nurse training schools, forcing the closing of 16 training schools in Missouri.

The 19th Century

Only 10 years after the first school of nursing was established in the United States, a group of 20 educational, medical, legal and civic leaders in St. Louis convened an organizational meeting on December 7, 1883, establishing the St. Louis Training School for Nurses. The eight woman executive committee chose Mrs. William H. Pulsifer, a non-practicing physician, as president of the organization. Mrs. Pulsifer had investigated conditions at the City Hospital regarding the care of the citys sick, poor residents and was instrumental in interesting others in establishing a school of nursing.

Southeast Missouri State University has been training nurses since 1958 and has one of the best nursing programs in Missouri. The Southeast Missouri State University nursing school has an online RN-BSN program that is great for working nurses. It has BSN and MSN degrees that can be completed on-campus or online.
