Whitehouse High School Prepares Students For Nursing Program

TYLER, Texas – The pandemic may have highlighted and emphasized it, but the need for healthcare workers has always been an important one.

Several high schools around East Texas are preparing seniors for those careers, even before graduation.

Whitehouse High School is one of a select number of schools in East Texas that has a health science program.

The program offers two options, giving seniors the ability to become certified nursing assistants or certified pharmacy technicians prior to graduating high school.

Its been a hands-on experience learning more about people and how to help them and just taking care of them and how to just help ourselves and our growth and humanity, said one of the certified nursing assistant students.

The certified nursing aid room has hospital beds donated by CHRISTUS Mother Frances and UT Health Systems to train nurse aides.

Pharmacy tech students have access to an IV therapy room and a fully stocked mock pharmacy with real bottles and fake medicine.

To be able to get hands on experience in the lab with a real bed, some of them maybe with a mannequin, with a vital sign machine to work on the computer or whatever it can be, it really helps prepare them for what its going to be like when they get into the hospital or healthcare environment, Chief Nursing Officer at CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital, Shelly Welch said.

These health science programs prepare students to meet the growing demand of hospitals and other healthcare facilities.

Highland Pines Hosts Annual Appreciation Breakfast For 9/11 First Responders

LONGVIEW, Texas – With the 21st anniversary of 9/11 coming up, nursing and rehab center Highland Pines put on their annual drive-by breakfast for first responders.

The idea came about the year after 9/11, when Highland Pines workers Candace Read and Carla Reaves wanted to do something to show appreciation for all that first responders do.

I think it gave all of us a wake-up call, Read said. I think we took people for granted, our first responders for granted, to a certain extent. We appreciate them, but maybe we dont tell them that. When we see them, we should tell them we appreciate them.

During Highland Pines event, EMS, police, fire and sheriffs departments come by to enjoy great food and fellowship with one another.

The occasion gives people an extra reason to remember 9/11, and Chief Deputy Craig Harrington reflected on how that day impacted him and his own job.

He said, Its a pretty somber remembrance that, you know, sometimes this job does require the ultimate sacrifice, and its usually on days you never expect it to happen, and September the 11th was a day that nobody that was working up there thought it was gonna end the way it did. So, its just an eye opening experience.

Harrington said he doesnt always get to see his fellow city partners, so he enjoys the comradery that the event brings.

This is Highland Pines 20th annual breakfast event.
