Learn Not To Cram Work

St. Louis’ 100-year-old nursing school will not accept new students

Nursing school is no mean feat. However, waiting until the last minute to cram work then do coursework makes things even more complicated and is a recipe for failure. With so much school work requiring your attention, you need to prioritize whats important and focus on just that.

And theres no way to get around it. Youll have much to deal with and handle, but good time management skills will enable you to manage your schedules and studies less overwhelming.

What To Do If Youve Been Academically Dismissed

Being told that you cant return to college might feel like an overwhelming blow. You might wonder how you can come back from that, but dont give up hope! You do have options after being academically dismissed.

Your options include:

  • Appealing the decision. If you believe extenuating circumstances contributed to your low academic performance, you may want to file an appeal. The school might reverse its decision if you can demonstrate that those circumstances are no longer an issue.
  • Reapplying after the time prescribed. Your college may allow you an opportunity to reapply for admission at some point. Most will ask you to sit out for at least one full semester before pursuing readmittance. During that time, you may decide to take a break from school or pick up some classes at a community college.
  • Choosing a new college. At a new school, you may benefit from changes like smaller class sizes or a more flexible schedule, or you might simply appreciate the opportunity for a clean slate.

Whichever option you choose to pursue, you may want to consider this situation as a personal learning and growing experience. It may help to evaluate what went wrong with your college experience so you can come up with some new plans of action for next time.

    What Is Academic Dismissal

Colleges want students to succeed in their studies. If youre struggling to achieve passing grades, you may end up on the road to academic dismissal.

Academic dismissal is when the school tells you that you will not be able to continue your studies there. Your standing as a student will be revoked, and you wont be allowed to enroll in any more courses.

Getting dismissed from college doesnt usually happen after failing just one course or having one rough semester. Its typically the result of a repeated pattern of poor grades for one semester after another.

Before reaching academic dismissal, you may go through a series of disciplinary stages meant to help you turn things around. These may include:

Each college sets its own process for academic discipline, so yours may not follow these steps exactly. The GPA thresholds for each step also vary among schools and may depend on how long youve been enrolled.

For specifics on your schools academic policies, you may consult your student handbook or ask your academic advisor.

Submit An Accurate And Complete Application

Avoid an application or resume with grammatical or spelling errors, as these can disqualify an applicant immediately.

The resume is the best piece of the application. Be sure it is up-to-date, accurate, and without a lot of extra “fluff.” Remove any track changes as this can lead the college to assume the applicant is not committed to nursing. Include any work history, volunteer hours, leadership activities and education and have it reviewed by a professional for a nominal fee.

    Apply For More Programs

Keep in mind that just because you didnt get into one nursing program doesnt mean you would be rejected for another. In fact, it is a very good idea to go ahead and apply to more than one school right away. If you have access to the programs, apply for four or five. This way, one rejection will not be that detrimental since you will have other options as well.

This is exactly what I ended up doing. I used a site called BestNursingDegree.com when I was searching for a school.

Our situation was unique . . . we were about to have our first child, I was looking for a Second Degree program, and I needed out of my job immediately. With BestNursingDegree.com I was able to find a program that fit all of my specifications . . . and the best part is that its free.

If you apply to several different nursing schools, then this gives you more chances to get accepted to one of them. If you dont, not to worry. You have other actions you can take too.

    Other Healthcare Career Paths

Failing Out of Nursing School – What’s Next? – @Level Up RN

Nursing Home Administrator. One possible career that does not involve direct patient care is a Nursing Home or Assisted Living Administrator. With baby boomers now facing the need for extended medical care or assisted living, the demand for administrators and assisted administrators is growing.

Administrators are responsible for making sure the residents receive quality care and have a quality of life no matter their health needs. They make sure care plans for each resident are appropriate for their health and personal needs. They are accountable for maintaining the home in keeping with state and federal laws and regulations.

Health Educator. This often requires a four-year degree. Educators work in communities to help people learn behaviors that promote health. Among their many tasks are to find the health care and social services needed.

Whatever you do, do not give up. Failing nursing school is not the end of the world for you. Now, you know you have options for still pursuing a career in healthcare. Remember the encouraging words of Thomas Edison, who said, Many of lifes failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up. You may now be very close to success.

    Meet With A Counselor

Want to be successful as a nurse in college? There is no need to reinvent the wheel. Nursing schools deal with potential applicants every single day and they are prepared to help students who want to learn and join their programs. Its a good idea to schedule an appointment with a counselor at the school you want to attend. They can connect you to resources, clearly outline what steps and classes you need to take in order to boost your credentials, and even help you identify your own strengths to help you study more effectively.

If youre still in high school, go to your high school guidance counselors office and get assistance on courses that may help boost your GPA, find nursing schools that may accept lower GPAs, or take additional steps you can take to increase your chances of being accepted.
