Clinical Role Transition Experience
The Clinical Role Transition experience is a six- to eight-week program provided to senior nursing students attending one of Northwestern Memorial Hospital’s affiliated schools of nursing. During the CRT experience, students work one on one with a nursing preceptor to develop critical thinking skills, hone technical skills and learn how to prioritize care. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in classroom learning sessions and Grand Rounds within specialized clinical areas.
At the end of the eight-week program, nurse externs will receive a formal evaluation, and if they qualify, be considered for future employment pending open positions.
This is an unpaid student experience.

Nursing Student Experiences At Northwestern Memorial Hospital
Northwestern Medicine provides numerous opportunities for nursing students to be part of a knowledgeable and caring team of healthcare professionals who are committed to providing exceptional patient care. We currently have affiliations with 12 schools of nursing for clinical rotations and clinical role transition experiences. We also offer a student nurse externship, which is a competitive summer experience open to any nursing student.
Advanced Practice Registered Nurses Typically Do The Following
- Take and record patients’ medical histories and symptoms and set up plans for patients care or contribute to existing plans.
- Perform physical exams.
- Observe patients and diagnose various health problems.
- Perform and order diagnostic tests and analyze results.

Dr. Kamel has received the Magnus P. Urnes Award for excellence in teaching and the Hart Award from the Illinois Division of Y-ME for distinguished service and dedication to Breast Cancer Awareness and Civil Service.
The American Heart Association proudly recognized Dr. Kamel with the 2007 Women with Heart Award for outstanding support of the annual Go Red for Women Luncheon and her dedication to making a difference in the fight against heart disease and stroke.
Dr. Kamel has received numerous teaching awards and has been honored as top doctor from Castle Connelly in 2013.
Dr. Kamel has been an active member of the Friends of Prentice Board for over 20 years and is involved as a Board member at the Lookingglass Theater.
Dr. Kamel is married and has three children and lives in Chicago, IL.

Nursing School At Northwestern College
With our Associate of Applied Science in Nursing degree in Chicago, Northwestern College has created a program aimed at giving you all the skills and tools you need to advance your career in nursing. Students graduate with ability to plan, implement, and evaluate the effectiveness of a plan of care communicate and collaborate with patients, families, groups, and other healthcare professionals assume accountability for their decisions and actions procure and apply new knowledge in the workplace and model professional behavior that adheres to standards and ethical codes of conduct.
Students must complete at least 107 credit hours in order to earn an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Nursing. Classes in this program include:

Admission And Progression Requirement For The Advanced Practice Concentrations

Admission to the practicum component of either advanced practice concentration means that the MSN degree-seeking student is eligible to progress beyond the core courses to complete the program of study. Applications for admission to the practicum component should occur during the semester in which the student is scheduled to complete the core course work.
The following criteria will be considered for admission to the Family Nurse Practitioner or Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner concentrations:
- Meet regular admission criteria to MSN program .
- Cumulate Grade Point Average rank in the MSN program. Cumulate GPA in the required advanced practice core courses: NURS 507/607, NURS 517/617, and NURS 518/618 .
- At least one year of appropriate nursing experience.
- Drug testing will be required.
- Evidence of CPR certification, OSHA/HIPPA Training, verification of Tb test, required immunizations, liability insurance, and health insurance.
The Graduate Coordinator will notify students of the status of their application at the close of the semester in which they have applied, following calculation of final GPA. Once admitted to the declared NP concentration, the student is expected to follow the full-time or part-time degree plan which becomes part of their record. Students who do not follow their degree plan may lose a practicum slot and will be required to reapply to the role concentration.

Student Nurse Internship Program
The Northwestern Memorial Hospital student nurse internship program is an intensive, eight-week summer program during which student nurses partner with a nurse preceptor to develop critical thinking skills, hone technical skills and learn how to prioritize care. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in classroom learning sessions and Grand Rounds within specialized clinical areas.
Candidates must be able to commit to an eight-week summer program and to continued employment at Northwestern Memorial Hospital until they graduate. At the end of the eight-week program, nurse interns will receive a formal evaluation, and if they qualify, an employment offer to continue working at Northwestern Memorial Hospital until they transition into a staff nurse role. Student nurse interns will receive a competitive salary and will have the option of flexible hours to accommodate their academic schedules.

Northwestern Oklahoma State Universitys online nurse practitioner program has been named the best in the country out of 203 accredited colleges and universities in the nation evaluated by Intelligent.com. Criteria used for the ranking included flexibility, faculty, course strength, cost and reputation.
Intelligent.com created a Top 35 Nurse Practitioner Programs list from their evaluations. Northwestern is the top-ranked nursing school in this listing.

Msn Nurse Practitioner Concentration
The following concentrations can be chosen for NSUs functional role of Nurse Practitioner:
Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner: The Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner clinical sequence has one functional area: Role of the Nurse Practitioner. Students who pursue the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner sequence will take the MSN core courses, four clinical courses, clinical practicums, role courses, an advanced assessment course, and Pharmacotherapeutics, in addition to, a course in Family Dynamics. The sequence of studies requires a minimum of 42 credits and leads to the MSN degree. In addition, Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner graduates will be eligible to apply for the American Nurses Credentialing Center and the American Association of Critical Care Nurses Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner certification examination and for other examinations as deemed appropriate by certifying bodies This clinical sequence will prepare Advanced Practice Nurses in acute care nursing practice who can function in acute care settings, providing care to adults of all ages.. Nurse practitioner students will complete a professional paper in lieu of thesis.
