Florence Nightingale: Death And Legacy

WORK VLOG: My Nursing Night Shift Routine! NICU Nurse

In August 1910, Florence Nightingale fell ill but seemed to recover and was reportedly in good spirits. A week later, on the evening of Friday, August 12, 1910, she developed an array of troubling symptoms. She died unexpectedly at 2 p.m. the following day, Saturday, August 13, 1910, at her home in London.

Characteristically, she had expressed the desire that her funeral be a quiet and modest affair, despite the publics desire to honor Nightingalewho tirelessly devoted her life to preventing disease and ensuring safe and compassionate treatment for the poor and the suffering. Respecting her last wishes, her relatives turned down a national funeral. The Lady with the Lamp was laid to rest in Hampshire, England.

The Florence Nightingale Museum, which sits at the site of the original Nightingale Training School for Nurses, houses more than 2,000 artifacts commemorating the life and career of the Angel of the Crimea. To this day, Florence Nightingale is broadly acknowledged and revered as the pioneer of modern nursing.

Can You Get A Nursing Degree Or Become A Nurse Fully Online

Yes, you can earn a nursing degree online, whether to become a nurse or to advance your RN education, but you will still need to do a few on-ground courses. When choosing an online program, pay attention to how it works, because no good online nursing program is ever fully online good programs are actually hybrid. Especially for students who want to become nurses and need to get their ADN first, most online programs still require in-person learning and clinical labs, even though most of the didactic instruction happens online.

The reasoning is because there are many skills that can only be learned by caring for patients through hands-on experience. While online courses can deliver the concepts of nursing, they are lacking the sights, sounds, and immersive experience of being in a hospital or other health care facility.

We highly advise that learners who need the flexibility of an online program choose a hybrid program, and not a fully online alternative. If you dont have the time in your life right now to complete at least a few on-ground courses, take some time to prioritize, and see what else in your life can wait. Dont let an inadequate program jeopardize your chances at a successful career.

Most online nursing programs you will encounter are geared towards RNs who already obtained a license after passing the NCLEX-RN exam and have either graduated with a Nursing Diploma or an Associate Degree in Nursing.

Florence Nightingale: Early Life

Florence Nightingale was born on May 12, 1820, in Florence, Italy to Frances Nightingale and William Shore Nightingale. She was the younger of two children. Nightingales affluent British family belonged to elite social circles. Her mother, Frances, hailed from a family of merchants and took pride in socializing with people of prominent social standing. Despite her mothers interest in social climbing, Florence herself was reportedly awkward in social situations. She preferred to avoid being the center of attention whenever possible. Strong-willed, Florence often butted heads with her mother, whom she viewed as overly controlling. Still, like many daughters, she was eager to please her mother. I think I am got something more good-natured and complying, Florence wrote in her own defense, concerning the mother-daughter relationship.

Florences father was William Shore Nightingale, a wealthy landowner who had inherited two estatesone at Lea Hurst, Derbyshire, and the other in Hampshire, Embley Parkwhen Florence was five years old. Florence was raised on the family estate at Lea Hurst, where her father provided her with a classical education, including studies in German, French and Italian.

From a very young age, Florence Nightingale was active in philanthropy, ministering to the ill and poor people in the village neighboring her familys estate. By the time she was 16 years old, it was clear to her that nursing was her calling. She believed it to be her divine purpose.

At this point in our lives, we need someone to inspire and motivate us. We need someone to show us what we are working towards, and why we need to stick to the fight.

Luckily, there is, or should I say, there was. No one did it better than the Lady with the Lamp Florence Nightingale. Through her selflessness, dedication, and commitment to serving others, she revolutionized nursing as a profession.

Nursing In Peace And War

Despite family reservations, Nightingale was eventually able to enroll at the Institution of Protestant Deaconesses at Kaiserswerth in Germany for two weeks of training in July 1850 and again for three months in July 1851. There she learned basic nursing skills, the importance of patient observation, and the value of good hospital organization. In 1853 Nightingale sought to break free from her family environment. Through social connections, she became the superintendent of the Institution for Sick Gentlewomen in Distressed Circumstances, in London, where she successfully displayed her skills as an administrator by improving nursing care, working conditions, and efficiency of the hospital. After one year she began to realize that her services would be more valuable in an institution that would allow her to train nurses. She considered becoming the superintendent of nurses at Kings College Hospital in London. However, politics, not nursing expertise, was to shape her next move.

Literature And The Women’s Movement

Historian of science I. Bernard Cohen argues:

Nightingale’s achievements are all the more impressive when they are considered against the background of social restraints on women in Victorian England. Her father, William Edward Nightingale, was an extremely wealthy landowner, and the family moved in the highest circles of English society. In those days, women of Nightingale’s class did not attend universities and did not pursue professional careers their purpose in life was to marry and bear children. Nightingale was fortunate. Her father believed women should be educated, and he personally taught her Italian, Latin, Greek, philosophy, history, and most unusual of all for women of the time writing and mathematics.:98

Lytton Strachey was famous for his book debunking 19th-century heroes, Eminent Victorians . Nightingale gets a full chapter, but instead of debunking her, Strachey praised her in a way that raised her national reputation and made her an icon for English feminists of the 1920s and 1930s.

In 1972, the poet Eleanor Ross Taylor wrote “Welcome Eumenides”, a poem written in Nightingale’s voice and quoting frequently from Nightingale’s writings.Adrienne Rich wrote that “… Eleanor Taylor has brought together the waste of women in society and the waste of men in wars and twisted them inseparably.”

LAS VEGAS March 04, 2019

Nightingale College, a fully accredited distance learning nursing school, has partnered with local health care facilities to provide a BSN Degree program in Las Vegas, Nevada.

According to a recent CNN report, schools are rejecting nursing applicants despite an estimated need for one million additional nurses nationwide by 2022. The demand for nurses in Las Vegas is high, but due to limited space, qualified applicants to local nursing schools are often placed on waiting lists, sometimes for years, before beginning the nursing program at local campuses.

Nightingale College has no waiting list. The College recognizes the urgent need for nurses and has formed a unique partnership with local health care facilities to provide immediate access to nursing education. All qualified applicants have a guaranteed position in the next available program start. The first Las Vegas start is May 6, 2019. Nightingale College offers three starts per year.

The 12-month RN-to-BSN program is designed for working professionals. Nevada RNs seeking to advance their nursing career can earn their BSN 100 percent online through Nightingale College.

The School For Nurses

Sometimes Florence Nightingle would take the entire class of nurseprobationers from the Nightingale Training School at St. Thomas Hospitalon holiday outings to Lea Hurst. This photo was taken on such a daywith an older Miss Nightingale and Sir Harry Verney, who was active inthe school and the Nightingale Fund which supported the schoolindependent of the hospital.

The Badge of the Nightingale Training School. Introduced by Dame Alicia Lloyd Still in 1925, its design is taken from the eight-pointed cross of the Knights of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem. Its four arms symbolize the Cardinal Virtues — Prudence, Temperance, Justice and Fortitude — and the points represent the Eight Beatitudes which spring from the practice of those virtues. The color blue was chosen as being the color of the ribbon of the Order of Merit of Miss Nightingale. The inclusion of the Tudor rose, fleur-de-lis and the shield with the sword of St. Paul afford a link with the Hospital coat of arms. The center of the design portrays the head of Miss Nightingale in relief, with the words, “Schola Sancti Thomae.”

To be a good nurse, one must be an improving woman for stagnant waterssooner or later, and stagnant air, as we know ouselves, always growcorrupt and unfit for use. Is any one of us a stagnant woman? — Address to the Probationers ofthe Nightingale Training School at St. Thomas’s Hospital, London, 1872. FN wrote many addresses to the students but never delivered any in person.

Homework & Course Schedule

When it comes to online nursing programs, youre entirely responsible for how you choose to manage your time, place of study, and schedule. One problem online learners face is procrastination, so now is a great time to work on your planning and organization skills. Otherwise, doing your homework and following course materials will prove more difficult.

A good tip is to take the time to review the syllabus. This will help you understand the class format, the requirements, and also the expectations you have to meet. Thus, it will be easier to devise a schedule that works for you and no assignment will find you unprepared.

Becoming An Rn Through Online Adn Programs

Paint Night

Online ADN programs can more accurately be regarded as hybrid programs. They offer online didactic instruction, which means you can complete most of your coursework in an online environment. Still, because its practically impossible to become a competent nurse without real, in-person clinical experience, you will have to undergo on-site experiential learning in a medical facility.

State nursing boards require a fixed number of in-person clinical hours in order to become an RN, which may vary from one state to another. Hands-on learning prepares you for the actual life of a nurse, which implies working with real patients, real equipment. Plus, it helps you build a deep foundation with future patients and have a better understanding of clinical experience.

Most ADN programs include nursing classes like Pharmacology, Advanced Issues in Cognition, and Gerontological Nursing that can be taken online. These classes have no hands-on skills associated with them, so offering them in a virtual environment doesnt reduce the quality of learning.

If you have the dream to become a nurse, but dont know where to start, feel free to call Nightingales admissions office at 801-689-2160 or set up a Discover Interview with Admissions.

Florence Nightingales Nursing Journey

Florence Nightingales life story is nothing short of inspiring. She gave up a life of luxury and went against her parents wishes to pursue nursing in 1844.

As a nurse, she was so dedicated that instead of sleeping, she did nighttime rounds to tend to patients while carrying a lamp, hence her nickname, lady with the lamp.

Due to her work, the death count in the hospital was reduced by over two-thirds. When she came back after the war in 1855, Queen Victoria awarded Nightingale what is now known as the Nightingale jewel, along with $250,000, which she used to fund a nurse training school and a hospital.

Nightingale tackled everything that life threw at her and came out successful. She was the FOUNDER OF MODERN NURSING and is a figurehead in nursing. To this day, she is still regarded as a hero, and that is why as nurses, we often look up to her for inspiration.

Nightingale College Is Helping To Solve The Nursing Shortage

Last year the pandemic put into focus the decades-long nursing shortage in America. Jonathan Tanner realized that his institution, Nightingale College, had an effective solution for two aspects of that shortage the need for effective remote training and a way to place nurses in rural as well as urban centers.

Based in Salt Lake City, Nightingale College offers four nursing programs: the Associate of Science in Nursing, the Bachelor of Science in Nursing, the Registered nurse-to-BSN Program, and the Master of Science in Nursing Education Program. The college has 28 regional partner locations in 12 states. Nightingale was founded in 2010 by Wade Foster, and in 2012, was acquired by Palm Ventures based in Connecticut with office in Greenwich and London, UK.

Nightingale uses its proprietary instructional content combined with its online platform to train nurses efficiently, wherever theyre located. The company encourages rural graduates to stay where they are and contribute to their communities. Evidence indicates that if the nursing staff actually look like their patients, from a demographic standpoint, they will see better outcomes, says Tanner. Nightingale emphasizes teaching nurses online so nurses will stay close to home and serve their own communities.

How Long Do Online Nursing Programs Take

NURSING SCHOOL VLOG | week 1, night shift clinical, how I study…

On average, earning your Associates Degree in Nursing takes up to two years. Depending on your previous educational background, getting your BSN degree online can take anywhere from 12 months to four years, while online MSN degrees usually take around 2 years to complete.

When it comes to online learning you can also opt for an accelerated program, which lets you earn your degree faster. Granted, this type of program is more challenging, but if you are looking for the fastest route towards your degree, this may be a worthy option to consider. Also, if you already have a Bachelors Degree in an unrelated field and wish to switch to nursing, that might also shorten the duration of your studies.

The Nightingale College online nursing programs are specifically designed to be completed in a fairly short amount of time, while also holding onto the highest standards of nursing education. Generally, this is how long it takes to complete each online program at our college:

Florence Nightingale Quotes On Life

  • Let each person tell the truth from his own experience.
  • Everything is sketchy. The world does nothing but sketch.
  • Life is a hard fight, a struggle, a wrestling with the principle of evil, hand to hand, foot to foot. Every inch of the way is disputed. The night is given us to take a breath, to pray, to drink deep at the fountain of power. The day, to use the strength which has been given us, to go forth to work with it till the evening.
  • Patriotism is not enough, there must be no hatred or bitterness for anyone.
  • Live life when you have it. Life is a splendid gift there is nothing small about it. For the greatest things grow by Gods Law out of the smallest. But to live your life you must discipline it. You must not fritter it away in fair purpose, erring act, inconstant will but make your thoughts, your acts, all work to the same end and that end, not self but God. That is what we call character.
  • Never dispute with anybody who wishes to contradict you, says a most reasonable saint.
