Kissimmee Nursing Students Forced To Pay Out Of Pocket Or Leave After Losing Financial Aid

Video: Nursing students about to be kicked out over financial aid issues Nursing students in one Central Florida program say they’re about to be kicked out even though they did nothing wrong.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. Students pursuing nursing degrees at the MedLife Institute are facing a two-week deadline to come up with $1,500 in unexpected tuition bills if they want to continue in the program instead of being kicked out.

MedLife, which runs nursing schools statewide, began accepting federal financial aid in 2016 based on an application filed by its campus in Naples. At the time, the school had recently terminated one of its degree programs due to lack of attendance. That program ran for less than two years, but the schools Kissimmee campus director said the financial aid application mistakenly listed it as having fulfilled the U.S. Department of Educations requirement that programs run at least two years before qualifying to accept federal funding.

Earlier this year, the DOE advised MedLife of the error and terminated the schools financial aid status. On Thursday, the agency advised MedLife an appeal of the decision was denied.

I was very happy that I was going to get assistance with paying for school, and I was going to sacrifice like many students and live off of very little money, a student at the Kissimmee campus said. She asked to be called Stacey due to concerns over being kicked out of the program for speaking publicly about the situation.

Florida Nursing School Loses Accreditation Students Lose Credits Money

The Medical Prep Institute of Tampa Bay, Fla., nursing school lost accreditation and is on probation with the state, but continues to recruit students, according to ABC affiliateWFTS-TV.

“It’s ruined my life, pretty much,” Elizabeth Ford, a former nursing student at MPI, told WFTS-TV. “I am out all that money. All that time.”

Ms. Ford enrolled at MPI in 2019 after the school offered her a $5,000 scholarship. She later learned the school lost accreditation, meaning other schools wouldn’t accept transfer credits and students couldn’t receive federal financial aid.

In 2020, the Florida Board of Nursing put MPI’s associate degree nursing program on probation for poor passing rates on the National Council of State Boards of Nursing Licensure exam. In 2018 and 2019, only 68 and 69 percent of MPI students passed the test, respectively, compared to a national 85 percent passing rate.

“It’s basically a self-learning environment,” Ms. Ford told WFTS-TV.

At least six former students told WFTS-TV they were disappointed with the education they received at MPI.

“We didn’t have the correct things, so we could never learn an IV, we couldn’t learn Foley care,” former student Ashley Ferrari told WFTS-TV.

The students interviewed had a graduation ceremony but none of them received diplomas, according to WFTS-TV. They were told they had to take remediation classes, part of a new policy created after MPI was put on probation.

Investigates Florida Nursing Programs Not Meeting State Standards

Young Florida nurses share life in COVID-19 unit

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. More than 1/3 of nursing programs in Florida are not meeting state standards. Florida requires that programs be within 10 percent of the national average for students passing the license test, currently 36 percent of schools in the state are below that threshold. “It’s very concerning,” Mary Lou Sole, the head of the nursing program at the University of Central Florida, said. “People are getting loans for an education that they are not able to use and not able to practice.” UCF, which has a Bachelor of Science in nursing program, had 228 out of 233 students pass the license test in 2014. Other Central Florida schools, including Daytona State College, Seminole State and Valencia College, had passage rates above the national average. However, some local schools have had consistent reporting periods with number below the national average, a concern for nursing educators. Med-Life Institute in Kissimmee offers two programs. One is accredited, the other is not and neither has as passage rate above 50 percent. Med-Life representatives told 9 Investigates that the rating is based on a student’s first attempt at the license test and that it offers free tutoring to students in need of extra assistance. For its part, the state is trying to keep an eye on failing programs. If a program falls below the national average for two years in a row, it is placed on probation and must submit a plan and increase its passage rate.
