What Is A Nurse Practitioner

A nurse practitioner is a part of a larger category of health care service providers known as advanced practice registered nurses and work with others in hospitals, clinics, private practices, and research environments. Becoming a nurse practitioner can be a lengthy process. A masters degree or doctorate in nursing is required for most nurse practitioner positions. Nurse practitioners must also be licensed to practice as a registered nurse in their states and must typically achieve certification from a national organization like the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, the American Nurses Credentialing Center or the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board. Experience in the field of nursing is also required for licensure and certification in most areas.

Nursing Skills And Simulation Labs

In addition to online coursework, the ABSN track at CTX includes hands-on skills and simulation labs. These labs are held in our state-of-the-art facility that mimics a real clinical environment.

Skills labs involve practicing basic tasks such as checking vital signs, then gradually progressing to more complex tasks like tracheostomy care. All labs take place under the watchful eye of our faculty.

In simulation labs, students practice in-person patient care on both high-fidelity manikins and mock patients . Our manikins exhibit lifelike symptoms and reactions to care. Instructors maneuver the manikins behind the scenes in real time, giving students the opportunity to think on their feet in an authentic way.

Following each scenario, instructors hold debriefing sessions with students to go over what they did correctly and what they could improve.

Both skills and simulation labs allow students to apply the nursing concepts theyve learned in a safe environment, building the confidence necessary for clinical rotations.

Msn Degree Program Considerations If You Are Currently An Rn With An Associates Degree Or Diploma

ENTRY LEVEL MASTERS in NURSING PROGRAMS | Worth it? Is BSN Better?

If you are currently an RN and have a diploma or an associates degree, there are bridge programs offered by online schools to allow you to earn a masters in nursing without having a bachelors degree in nursing. Basically, the bridge program does just what the name suggests. It fills the gap, so to speak, with the necessary schooling you would have received when earning the bachelor of science in nursing degree. Most online programs refer to these programs as RN to MSN and/or RN to BSN to MSN.

Who would choose to pursue this type of program? This is normally someone who is a registered nurse with years of experience and would like to become a nurse practitioner, nurse midwife, nurse anesthetist, or clinical nurse specialist of some type. Most people who are RNs are currently working and have families, so going back to traditional college to earn a BSN, and then an MSN may not be an option for him/her because of the time and money that would be required. An online bridge program may be a better consideration.

There are many factors that affect how long program completion time will be for each individual. A few of these factors include program type, student academic progress, and credit transferability. See the Tracks image at the top of the page for an estimated program completion time. Programs range from 18 months up to 36 months. Again, these amounts of time all depend on the individual student and may include the influencing factors listed above.

Distance And Accessibility In Your State

Applicants to any of our distance-accessible courses/programs that may lead to professional licensure or certification should become familiar with the regulations governing distance accessible programs in their state. Licensure requirements vary from state to state and by professional organization. Emory is working toward developing a database to provide this information. Prospective students residing in states other than Georgia and those states identified, should contact their stateâs Board of Nursing and Department of Education for specific rules and regulations pertaining to completion of clinical learning experiences in that state when enrolled in a distance-accessible program.

Accelerated Nursing Program Vs Direct Entry

While researching MSN programs, you may come across accelerated and direct-entry MSN programs. Both are designed for professionals looking to change or advance their nursing career. Accelerated programs may award a BSN and MSN to graduates, or they may just award an MSN. Its important to research programs carefully and find one tailored to your educational background.

Typically, those pursuing a direct-entry nursing program do not have a bachelors degree in nursing or a related field. Those pursuing an accelerated MSN may already have their BSN.
