Master of Science in Nursing: Entry into Nursing Program

A Doctor of Nursing Practice is the highest degree in nursing practice. A traditional DNP program builds on an MSN program and prepares you for leadership positions at the top of the profession.

Admission requirements for a DNP program vary by program and institution. Some DNP programs offer BSN-to-DNP options that allow you to achieve both an MSN and DNP at the completion of the program.

Since much of the learning in doctorate programs is independent and research-based, online DNP programs can facilitate your learning if youre a parent caring for young children or for your own parent, a student in a remote rural area, or a nurse who wants to continue working as you learn.

All students matriculating into a nurse anesthetist program after January 1, 2022, must be enrolled in a doctoral program.

Accredited DNP programs require a minimum of 1,000 post-baccalaureate practice hours, including those in post-masters programs. Your institution determines how many graduate clinical hours are applied to the DNP and the number of additional clinical hours required for you to reach the 1,000-hour minimum. Any graduate credits and clinical hours applied toward the DNP must be completed at accredited institutions.

Why A Traditional Msn Degree

As a BSN-educated nurse, youre prepared with the clinical skills and knowledge base you need to practice in hospitals and other healthcare settings. This allows you to gain valuable career experience as you consider options for specialization at the graduate level.

A traditional MSN degree allows you to take the next step and continue a systematic approach to expanding your education and expertise with the option to specialize. Traditional MSN programs provide a generalist degree or one of several specializations in a wide range of clinical and non-clinical areas. A masters level program is going to prepare any of these nurses with advanced specialty knowledge and skills to navigate in an area of nursing expertise, says Kathleen Poindexter, PhD, RN, CNE, ANEF, president-elect of the National League for Nursing , and assistant dean of undergraduate programs and faculty development and associate professor in the College of Nursing at Michigan State University. An MSN generalist degree will still give them the advanced type of skills needed to navigate our currently very complex healthcare environment.

Is An Msn Degree Worth It

We asked nurses who have earned their MSN degrees whether or not they thought it was worthwhile, here is what they had to say:

Sarah Gaines, MSN, Western Governors University

“Having a Master’s of Science in Nursing gives me the opportunity to leave the bedside without having to take a cut in pay. It also gives me a better chance of working in a role that allows me to do what I’m most passionate about — educating, empowering, and mentoring nurses who are new to the industry. Overall, I’m looking forward to having the flexibility and autonomy to excel in my career after I decide to leave the bedside. The hard work I put in to earn my MSN gives me endless opportunities that will continue to benefit my nursing career for years to come.”

Amy Heiss, MSN, University of Phoenix

“Deciding to obtain an advanced degree in nursing was one of the best career decisions I have made in over 27 years of nursing. It not only broadened my understanding of the profession and placed trends I witnessed in the working environment into context, but it opened new doors of opportunity for me. I was unsure where my master’s degree would take me, but when the new map of paths forward emerged, I was thankful I had decided to take the adventure!”

Amber Kendra, MSN, Grand Canyon University

Brian Burger, MSN, University of Cincinnati

Key Differences Between Rn And Msn Degrees

Online Nursing Degrees

MSN-degreed nurses not only provide an advanced level of patient care, but they can also do research, teach, impact public policy, consult with corporations and leading health systems. They will play an integral role in the future of health care in the United States.

Both RNs and those who pursue the more rigorous MSN degree have some similarities within their scope of practice including,

  • Both work closely with patients,
  • Both treat illness and monitor health,

However, pursuing an advanced degree will make a significant and immediate difference in,

  • Compensation,
  • Ability to work in a specialized area,
  • Opportunity to assume a leadership position

The differences between an RN and an MSN include:

  • A substantial difference in salary, with Advanced Practice Registered Nurses such as Nurse Practitioners and Clinical Nurse Specialists earning a median of $115,800 in 2019 compared to $57,000 to $73,300 per year earned by Registered Nurses depending upon whether they have their Associates Degree in Nursing or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
  • Potential for leadership and executive positions
  • MSN-degreed nurses often take on the responsibilities traditionally assigned to physicians. They are able to diagnose and treat acute and chronic illnesses, prescribe medications and create patient treatment plans.

Types Of Msn Programs

Once youve decided that an MSN degree is for you, there are a few different options on how to achieve your goal. Much of your decision on which is best for you will depend upon your current situation, whether or not you already have a nursing degree, and what type of degree you have, but will also depend upon your end goal, and whether you wish to be in a clinical or non-clinical setting. The four approaches available are:

Choose Your Specialty Area:

  • A baccalaureate degree in nursing from a nationally-accredited nursing program and a regionally-accredited college or university earned prior to applying to the MSN program.
  • A minimum cumulative baccalaureate grade point average of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale. GPAs are reviewed based upon the total BSN GPA. This includes transfer courses in RN Completion programs.
  • Satisfactory completion of a course in undergraduate statistics at the time of application.
  • An unencumbered US RN license in all states of practice.
  • Recommended but not required: one year full-time or two thousand hours of clinical practice as an RN within the last five years.

The MSN and Post MSN online programs are limited to working with certain states in the U.S. only. Moving into a state not recognized by the graduate nursing program will lead to inability to continue in MSN coursework. The exception to this is active military status.

  • Submit an online application, a $40 application fee, and three references with contact information.
  • Upload a current professional resume or curriculum vitae to your application account.
  • Submit official transcripts to Graduate Studies.
  • Official electronic transcripts are preferred and can be emailed from the previous institution to
  • Mailed transcripts can be sent to this address:Graduate Studies

What To Look For In A School

Before enrolling at a school, check that it will allow you to qualify for the licensure exam in your state. Your state board of nursing has the authority to approve the programs that meet its standards for education. Attending a school that your state board of nursing doesnt recognize can jeopardize your ability to qualify to take the NCLEX-RN or APRN exam for that state. You can check with your state board of nursing for a list of schools that meet their licensure criteria.

Today, more than ever, you have to be aware of state licensure and certification requirements, Poindexter advises. Theres also increased restrictions on state authorization, so that you may take an online program, but your state may not let you sit for licensure or certification there. They may not accept that program as part of that states academic programs.

Options For Online Versus Classroom Learning

Master of Nursing + Master of Science in Nursing (MN + MSN)

Programs that offer an MSN online allow you to complete your theory-based coursework at your convenience. This option can make the difference in reaching your goals if youre also juggling family responsibilities and/or a job. However, most traditional MSN programs require that students complete a clinical component that must be completed in person, so you may not be able to complete your entire MSN degree from the comfort of your home.

I think its very commonplace to see a good number of masters programs offered online for students who are already registered nurses, Poindexter says. Youll often see a hybrid program where maybe the students come to the academic institution a number of times during the semester but complete their general coursework in an online web delivery system. Can it be high quality and is it realistic? Absolutely.
