    Family Nurse Practitioner Concentration

    Completed applications for all NP and Nurse Midwifery programs are due on October 1, 2022. Select applicant interviews will be held on October 31 and November 1, 2022. PMHNP & NMW interviews will be scheduled in conjunction with Shenandoah University.

    The JMU Master of Science in Nursing Program prepares graduate nurses to meet the challenge of rapidly changing and increasingly complex health care environments. The Family Nurse Practitioner concentration prepares graduates to synthesize assessment data to diagnose and manage patient and family health and illness needs across the lifespan. The focus of FNP practice is health promotion and disease prevention. The FNP serves as a client partner and advocate within the health care delivery system. Students complete a total of 650 clinical practicum hours applying clinical skills, theories, and research findings to the primary care of children, adolescents, adults and older adults in a variety of health care settings.

    Graduates of the FNP program are qualified to take the certification exam through the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners or the American Nurses Credentialing Center /

    Msn Family Nurse Practitioner Program

    The MSN program offers the Family Nurse Practitioner concentration in an on-campus format or with fully online coursework and in-person practicum experiences. Content of courses, objectives, evaluation methods, and outcomes are identical to those for the on-campus program. Only the delivery format is different.

    Admission To The Master Of Science In Nursing Degree Program Is Competitive

    Ideal candidates demonstrate academic excellence and can clearly articulate an understanding of the role for which they are applying. The admissions committee reviews each application and considers the potential success of the applicant in a graduate program that requires intellectual curiosity and critical thought.

    To be considered for admission to the program prospective students must:

    • Apply to the Graduate School and NursingCAS.
    • Students applying for the Nurse Midwifery or Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner will need to also apply and meet the Shenandoah University requirements.
    • Have a bachelor’s degree in nursing or another field*, with a cumulative GPA of 2.8.
    • Hold a current unrestricted Registered Nurse License.
    • Have relevant professional clinical experience .
    • Have taken undergraduate or graduate course in Statistics with a grade of C or higher.
    • Hold current CPR certification
    • Meet the School’s technical standards for admission.
    • For international students, provide evidence of passing grade on CGFNS exam . Apply for VA RN license .

    After review of applications in NursingCAS, top candidates will be contacted for an interview. Interviews for NP and NMW applicants will be held on October 31 and November 1, 2022.

    Np Practicum Ii : 250 Hours

    Preferred sites are ambulatory sites providing care for patients with acute and chronic illnesses. These include family practices, internal medicine practices with a focus on primary care, Free Clinics, rural health clinics, etc. During Practicum II or III, FNP students should complete the OB or pediatric requirements. Ideally, the student is in 2-3 sites during this practicum.

    Np Practicum Selection Guidelines

    The purpose of these guidelines is to provide information about selection of appropriate clinical sites, and also to ensure that the proper experiences are obtained to allow students to successfully complete the program. The NP program at JMU is a primary care AGPCNP program. The following are guidelines for the practicum hours.

    • Must complete a minimum of 40 hours in OB/GYN
    • Must complete 80 pediatric hours
    • May choose an optional specialty rotation, up to 80 hours may be completed in this site
    • Preceptors may be a Nurse Practitioner, Physician , or Physician Assistant and must have at least 12 months of full-time practice experience.

    Clinical Nurse Leader and Nurse Administrator accepts applications on a rolling basis. Completed applications should be received at least 6 weeks prior to the start of the semester in which the student intends to enroll.

    For the FNP, AGNP, NMW and PMHNP the application deadlines is Oct. 1 at 5pm . Applications submitted after October 1 deadline may be considered based on merit and availability in the program.

    The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner concentration is offered in conjunction with Shenandoah University. Students complete the first year of study at James Madison University, and the second year of study at Shenandoah University . The JMU credits may be taken part-time or full-time. The second year of psychiatric mental health courses is taken in full-time study at Shenandoah University. Upon completion of the full curriculum, the student will graduate with an MSN degree from James Madison University and a Post Graduate Certificate in Psychiatric Mental Health from Shenandoah University.

    Criminal Background & Sexual Offender Checks

    The JMU School of Nursing Master of Science in Nursing and Doctor of Nursing Practice Programs are graduate-level, clinical programs. Based on Code of Virginia § 23.1-407.1 , the James Madison University School of Nursing Program will not deny admission to any applicant solely on the basis of criminal history. However, for any applicant who has been admitted, but not yet enrolled, the Graduate Programs may inquire about the applicants criminal history. The Graduate Program may then withdraw an offer of admission to anyone whom James Madison University determines has a criminal history that poses a threat to the institutions community. Therefore, for individuals admitted to the JMU SON Graduate Programs:

    • It is required that a criminal background and sexual offender check be completed.
    • These must be completed prior to enrollment. Additional checks may be required later in the Program, just prior to the start of fieldwork.
    • The student must comply with these additional checks in order to remain a student in good standing within the Program and before clinical placement can take place.
    • The cost of these background checks will be the sole responsibility of the student.

    Description of Major

    Nursing is a highly marketable helping profession that offers choices among many general and specialty areas of practice. The goal of the Nursing Department is to provide quality, professional undergraduate and graduate education that prepares nurse leaders to influence a changing profession, society, health care system, and global health needs. The program through the Department of Nursing leads to a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and prepares graduates to take the National Certification and Licensure Exam . Courses in the Nursing major span 4 semesters and normally begin in the fifth or sixth semester at JMU.
