How Can I Know If My Nursing School Is Accredited

WHAT HAPPENS IF MY NURSING SCHOOL ISN’T ACCREDITED? WHY IS ACCREDITATION IMPORTANT?

With the shortage of nurses, there are many nursing programs available, some online as well as traditional nursing colleges. There are also many for-profit schools offering quick courses and guaranteeing jobs immediately after graduation. You dont need to go to an accredited school to work as a nurse, but some employers, faced with two candidates for a job, will choose one from an accredited school. Transitioning to a higher nursing degree is easier if your degree is from a school with accreditation. Plus, many scholarships are only available to students at accredited nursing schools, so it is important to know if, and how, a school is accredited.

What is accreditation?

Accreditation is a nongovernmental process conducted by representatives of postsecondary institutions and professional groups. As conducted in the United States, accreditation focuses on the quality of institutions of higher and professional education and on the quality of educational programs within institutions. Two forms of accreditation are recognized: one is institutional accreditation, and the other is professional or specialized accreditation. Institutional accreditation concerns itself with the quality and integrity of the total institution, assessing the achievement of the institution in meeting its own stated mission, goals, and expected outcomes. The University of Akron has full accreditation from Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

The University of Akron School of Nursing has maintained full professional accreditation since its inception in 1967.

Nursing professionals constitute the bulk of healthcare workers in the U.S., with more than 3.8 million registered nurses currently practicing, according to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing . The need for qualified registered nurses and advanced practice registered nurses continues to grow as more doctors and nursing professionals retire.

To prepare for the anticipated shortage of healthcare professionals, prospective nurses need to earn a degree and gain experience in the field. Today, nursing students comprise more than half of all health professions students, according to the AACN. However, nursing students should be sure the program is accredited before applying for a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.

If you are already an experienced registered nurse and want to pursue a nursing degree, such as an online RN to BSN degree, choosing an accredited nursing program is essential. However, when it comes to regional vs. national accreditation, whats the difference? And why does it matter?

Considering Nursing Program Cost

Another factor students need to consider is the cost of their degree. Tuition rates vary by school size, the type of institution, and the degree program. For example, public schools offer in-state tuition to residents, and ADN programs cost less than BSN programs.

Aside from tuition, nursing students need to consider other costs, including:

  • School and lab fees
  • Other course materials such as uniforms and clinical supplies
  • Cost of living expenses which may include on-campus room and board

Luckily, both ACEN and CCNE are reputable accrediting agencies. The major difference between the two is the program levels that each accredits. And while its too early to be certain, CNEAs affiliation with the National League for Nursing means it may soon have the same stature.

  • The biggest issue is with programs without any programmatic accreditation at all. For example, in California, out of 141 schools with nursing programs, only 77 hold accreditation through either ACEN or CCNE.
  • Its difficult to generalize about programs that dont hold national nursing accreditation they could be fine. A quick scan of recent NCLEX pass rates in California shows that many such programs have impressive rates.

However, going to an ACEN- or CCNE-accredited school comes with more of a guarantee. These programs must maintain 80% pass rates to maintain accreditation and must meet similar markers for job placement.

Is The Nursing Program I’m Interested In Good

Just because a school offers a nursing degree doesn’t mean it’s a quality nursing degree.

First, make sure every school and nursing program you apply to is accredited. Any nursing program you apply to should be accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing and Education . If you don’t choose an accredited nursing program, you CANNOT sit for the NCLEX and earn an RN license. You’ll likely have difficulty finding a nursing job after graduation.

Second, check out student outcomes. A nursing school may have a low tuition rate and be accredited, but the NCLEX pass rates could leave something to be desired. In 2021, the US saw a total NCLEX first time pass rate of 85.3%. A pass rate below this would be below the national average. BSN-prepared nurses had a higher NCLEX pass rate of 88.97% as compared to ADN-prepared nurses at 82.47% or diploma nurses at 81%.

How To Find Out If A Nursing School Is Accredited

There is no doubt that accreditation is a must have for any nursing college you choose to attend so you must know how to verify accreditation. In order to find out which schools are nationally accredited, follow these easy steps:

  • Visit your institutions accreditation page to see who their accreditors are. Every accredited institution will most likely have such a page on their website.
  • Go to the accreditors official website.
  • Enter the colleges name to verify that your program or institution is indeed accredited.
  • For example, Nightingale Colleges BSN and RN-to-BSN programs are accredited by CCNE. Visit the CCNE website and enter Nightingale College to see the BSN and RN-to-BSN programmatic accreditation.

    Accreditation For Advancing Education

Transfer credits from ACEN and/or CCNE accredited colleges are widely accepted by most, if not all, graduate schools who are also accredited nationally. However, transferring credits from a regionally accredited school to a nationally accredited school, and vice versa, is less desirable by colleges. Many colleges will not accept the credits at all.

A good plan before enrolling in a nursing school is to simply ask the school’s advisor which agencies they are accredited with, and then determine what your future goals are for education. If the student never plans to attend a Master’s or Doctoral degree program, then it may not matter if the school is regionally or nationally accredited, as long as he or she can sit for the NCLEX-RN exam. However, plans can change, and it’s a good idea to keep options open for the future. Contact advisors or go online to see applicant requirements for regional graduate schools and what kinds of accreditation they require in accepting transfer credits.

Does It Matter Which Nursing School You Go To Should Nursing Students Try To Attend The Most Prestigious University Possible

The Importance of Nursing Accreditation & Is your school Accredited ?

Does it matter which nursing school you go to? Should nursing students try to attend the most prestigious university possible?.

Does it matter which nursing school you go to? Should nursing students try to attend the most prestigious university possible? Many aspiring nursing students ask this question.

The short answer is that the nursing school you choose to attend could affect your nursing career in some ways, but it certainly isnt the only thing that counts. Great nurses have come from not-so-great nursing programs, and vice versa.

Nevertheless, there are some things youll want to consider when comparing nursing schools.

Nursing School AccreditationAccreditation can be important for a few reasons. First, it shows that the nursing program has been reviewed and that it meets certain educational standards, which indicates that it will offer a quality educational experience.

Second, if you plan to attend graduate school, many graduate schools will require that you graduated from an accredited program for your undergraduate degree. Even if you dont see yourself going back to school for a masters or doctorate degree, you never know where the future will lead, so its good to keep your options open.

Finally, federal funding options for colleges and universities are often contingent upon accreditation. So if you are eligible for federally funded financial aid or grants, youll want to keep that in mind.

    What Is The Nclex

If you enroll in an ADN or BSN program, you’ll take the NCLEX-RN exam around the time of your graduation. The NCLEX certifies nurses, and no state or hospital will license or employ a nurse that hasn’t passed the NCLEX. Fortunately, all accredited nursing programs satisfy the prerequisites to sit for the NCLEX and should prepare you to pass the exam on your first try.

You’re not alone, though. Colleges and universities care about their students’ outcomes and want to see as many students pass the NCLEX as possible. Through a combination of coursework, lab courses, and clinicals, schools do all they can to prepare you to take and pass the NCLEX. Some nursing schools do this better than others, and that’s a factor worth considering when picking a college or university.

Can You Become A Licensed Rn If Your Nursing School Isnt Accredited

Can you take the NCLEX if you graduated from a nursing school that wasnt accredited? Can you work as a nurse without having graduated from an accredited school?

Those are all great questions that can be raised when considering attending a nursing school program that does not yet have an accreditation, or if you will soon be graduating.

We recently received a question on this very subject:

Hello, I am currently in my last semester of nursing school, ADN. My classmates and I are the 1st class before the college could be accredited. The accreditation team was here last week and the college did not pass and will not be accredited.

My question is are we still able to take the Wisconsin NCLEX exam in January and will we be employable? Please, any input or guidance you can offer would be so very appreciated. I look forward to hearing from you and I sincerely am hoping that these past 2 years of full time nursing school has not been for nothing as a single parent of 5 children. Thank you!

    Sincerely, Linda

    Hello Linda,

I am so very sorry to hear of your situation, and I can tell from your tone in the question that you must be so frustrated and worried right now . After plugging away for so long, caring for 5 children , and spending so much time at a nursing school, you are now uncertain if you will even be able to become licensed.

Faqs About Online Nursing Schools In Miami

Can I earn my nursing degree in Miami completely online?

Online nursing schools in Miami are becoming more common, but some programs will never be fully online since they require students to participate in a practicum. However some degrees, such as an RN to BSN or MSN, can be completed without visiting campus since they dont require any in-person learning.

Will my online Miami nursing degree be considered less valuable by employers?

Ultimately, future employers will be most concerned that you hold an active and unencumbered nursing license. To accomplish that, you need to attend a nursing program approved by the state board of nursing and accredited. Your degree wont even mention whether you attended an in-person or online nursing school in Miami.

Are online nursing programs in Miami more affordable than campus programs?

Its no secret that living in Miami can be expensive, especially when depending on student accommodations. While tuition may not be cheaper, studying online means you can find an affordable place that doesnt have to be near your school. You can also save on gas and parking by not traveling to campus multiple times each week.
