Admission Requirements & Prerequisites

• Previous baccalaureate degree with a GPA of 2.75 or above
• TEAS with a cumulative score of at least 65 it is highly recommended that all four categories score a minimum of 65
• Anatomy and Physiology I
• Chemistry
• College algebra or higher-level math course

Science prerequisites must include onsite labs. Each prerequisite course must be completed with a minimum grade of “C”.

These represent the minimum requirements needed for admission to the program and are not a guarantee of acceptance. The admission process is competitive and an interview may be required.

Requirements For Prescriptive Authority

A clinical nurse specialist, nurse midwife, or nurse practitioner who seeks prescriptive authority will need two semester hours of graduate coursework in pharmacology.

An out-of-state advanced practitioner will need to complete continuing education coursework if his or her qualifying pharmacology coursework was completed five or more years in the past. The licensing agency can accept continuing education coursework taken at any point during the prior two years. The applicant will need to demonstrate 30 total hours of continuing education with at least eight specifically in pharmacology. The out-of-state advanced practitioner will also need to demonstrate recent prescriptive experience.

Advanced practice nurses with prescriptive authority work under collaborative practice agreements. The licensing agency has provided a template. Prescriptive authority is renewed every other year. In most cases, the APN will need 30 hours of continuing education with at least eight in pharmacology. Continuing education requirements for the first renewal period will depend on date of issuance.

An advanced practice nurse who will prescribe controlled substances will also need a Controlled Substances Registration, or CSR, and a Federal Drug Enforcement Administration registration.

The state of Indiana does not have licenses for advanced practice nurses, except for nurse midwives. Nurse midwives must first have a midwifery degree from an accredited program and also be certified by the American College of Nurse Midwives. After they have done so, they submit an application and a copy of their Indiana RN license along with $50 to the Indiana State Board of Nursing.

Nurse midwives, clinical nurse specialists, and nurse practitioners who wish to do so can submit an application for prescription authority, which includes a $50 fee. Certified registered nurse anesthetists are not legally allowed to prescribe medications.
