Ceremony Rite Of Passage For Nursing Students

Masters degree students in the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse program recite their oath of patient care at the Universitys first White Coat Ceremony.

A student is cloaked in her white coat for the first time at the ceremony.

Professors asked masters degree students in Grand Canyon Universitys Advanced Practice Registered Nurse program to choose one word that says everything for them. One word that will be with them for the rest of their graduate program that represents life to them or that encompasses success.

Serendipity, serve, grace, perseverance, blessings, believe: Those were just a few of the words chosen by students who are enrolled in GCUs Family Nurse Practitioner program or the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program.

The words show the kind of grit characteristic of nurses, said Dr. Tami Wisely, Associate Dean for Graduate Programs in the College of Nursing and Health Care Professions, who spoke at the colleges first White Coat Ceremony on Friday in the Technology Building.

She shared with students the five characteristics of grit, according to American psychologist Angela Lee Duckworth: Courage, conscience, perseverance, resilience and passion.

The White Coat Ceremony at GCU symbolizes students transition from classroom work to their clinicals.

This was the first year for GCUs White Coat Ceremony.

What Else Should I Know About Prerequisite Courses

  • All prerequisite courses must be taken from an accredited institution and must be taken for credit, i.e., they must generate an official transcript and cannot generate only a certificate.
  • Courses taken online or at community colleges are acceptable.
  • Courses must grant a final letter grade .
  • For all prerequisite courses, it does not necessarily matter what the exact course title is so long as it matches the intent of the requirements. For example, all of the following course titles would fulfill our Biochemistry prerequisite: Introduction to Biochemistry, Foundations of Biochemistry, Principles of Biochemistry, Concepts of Biochemistry or Fundamentals of Biochemistry.
  • If a prerequisite course has an associated lab component, and both the lecture and lab components are awarded a separate grade, then the two grades will be averaged together to determine the overall grade. For example, if an applicant has an “A” in a 3 credit Human Anatomy course and a “B” in the associated 1 credit lab, then the overall grade would be an “A-.”

New Online Nursing Program Available Through Susla And Grand Canyon University

SHREVEPORT, La. – On Tuesday, officials from Grand Canyon University and Southern University at Shreveport signed a concurrent enrollment pathway agreement between the respective nursing programs of both institutions that will allow students currently enrolled in SUSLAs Associate of Science in Nursing program to begin taking core courses online towards the Bachelor of Science in Nursing at GCU, and then towards the Master of Science in Nursing.

This RN to BSN and RN to MSN Bridge offers the option to seamlessly transfer credits from SUSLA to the program at GCU for the completion of the degree. The program is designed for current students to get a step ahead in their goal to further their nursing education.

“The new RN to BSN agreement will open the doors of opportunity for SUSLAs minority student population,” said Dr. Lonnie McCray, interim vice chancellor for academic affairs and workforce development. “Minority students account for 34% of individuals completing a BSN program, with only 11% of that total being African American. This program can and will help alleviate this achievement gap.”

Appeaning believes the new program will also help alleviate the current shortage of registered nurses in the workforce, and eventually educators in the nursing education field.

Why Is There A Time Limit For Most Of The Prerequisite Courses

This seven year time frame is calculated from the date of course completion to the date of PA Program matriculation . For example, a Biochemistry course completed Fall 2015 would count towards the required prerequisite of a student with an anticipated program matriculation of Fall 2022, but a Genetics course completed Spring 2015 would not. This time limit is to assure some degree of current information in these fields.

Exceptions: By their very nature some working positions require people to maintain an adequate degree of current information in these basic sciences. Candidates employed in such positions should apply and include an explanation for the admissions committee on how they have maintained a degree of current information in these fields. The committee will decide whether or not to accept the explanation as sufficient enough to meet the prerequisite. This kind of exception is rarely granted.

Joined GCE in 2018

GCE focuses on putting its students and staff first, while keeping the Lord the center of the mission. Theyve fostered my growth and development and demonstrate care for me daily, which inspires me to provide the same level of care and service to each student and family I interact with.

Why do you love working at GCE?

I love being able to help families and having an impact. I appreciate that GCU allows us to take ownership of our jobs and gives us the freedom to help families/students in ways that work for us. We are provided with tools but can tweak those to make them successful in our territory.

Who succeeds at GCE?

People who succeed here have a can-do attitude, they learn how not to take no for an answer, are diligent and unwilling to fail and are willing to try and give it their all.

What do you want your future colleagues to bring to GCE?

Direct Patient Contact Experience

A minimum of 1,000 hours of direct patient contact experience is required as a prerequisite to admission to the PA Program. However, students who are successful in gaining admittance typically have greater than 1,00 hours accumulated. These hours may come from one experience or a combination of experiences and may be voluntary or paid work. Experiences having higher levels of training and responsibility are more desirable.

The table below is intended to provide basic guidance on how the Admissions Committee evaluates direct patient care experience. Although the table lists specific occupations as examples, the actual job title is much less important to the Admissions Committee than the tasks, duties and level of responsibility associated with it. Therefore, in order to receive the most accurate evaluation, it is in your best interest to provide the program with a detailed job description.

If your job entails some direct patient care duties and some duties that do not involve patient care, you should list these hours separately in the appropriate areas on the CASPA application.

PLEASE NOTE: The 1,000 hour minimum of direct patient contact hours must be completed prior to beginning the PA curriculum in August, not prior to applying for admission to the program. ^^ hours as a clinical research assistant may be counted when actual direct patient care takes place. For example, when the CRA is drawing blood, taking vital signs, performing wound care, etc.
