UConn developed its holistic nursing online graduate certificate to meet the demand for qualified professionals in this nontraditional field of nursing. This program explores holistic research, evidence-based practice, and integrative care.

The program can help prepare professionals for the holistic nursing specialist certification exam. Applicants must be registered nurses with a bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited school. Each cohort enrolls a maximum of 12 students.

Will These Count As Part Of My Required Degree Program+

Certificate programs are under the 40% rule, meaning that up to 40% of the credit hours in the certificate program may count towards the students degree program. That is, three credits of the 9-credit certificate program may count for both the certificate and the students degree program. The remaining six credits must be in addition to the students degree requirements. Whether you will be able to apply the 40% rule will depend on your program of study and the requirements of the University.

MSN: For MSN students, there are no elective hours, thus, the 9 credits of nursing education courses must be in addition to the required degree requirements. REMEMBER: If you are a MSN-education major in Health Care Systems, you do not need to apply for the certificate as these courses are a part of your degree program.

DNP : If you were admitted prior to 2020, you have a 3 or 4 credit elective requirement, therefore the 40% rule may apply. Only one of the 3 credit nursing education courses may count for both the certificate and your doctoral degree. If you were under a 4 credit elective requirement, you will need to take another 1 cr elective to meet the required program hours for your degree. This additional 1 credit cannot come from taking another nursing education certificate course.

Beginning in fall 2020, there are no electives in the DNP program, thus, the 9 credits of nursing education courses must be in addition to the required degree requirements.

What Are Graduate Nursing Certificate Programs In Canada

A graduate certificate in nursing is a non-degree program focused on advanced nursing practice and subject-matter expertise, as related to any of a variety of nursing roles and responsibilities. A certificate, in this context, is a credential earned by successfully completing a specified academic curriculum within a given program. It generally requires fewer courses than a degree program and might be used to demonstrate objectively a specific expertise or skill-setfor example, treating patients with certain issues, or working in a specialized area like anesthesia or labor and delivery.

Graduate certificates are post degree programs, meaning that programs build on prior undergraduate or graduate education. As such, students might be required to submit proof of having earned a certain type of degree in order to attend. However, graduate nursing certificates might be offered at a few different levels, appropriate to nurses at various levels of education.

Identifying And Classifying Nurse Educator Graduate Certificate Programs

There are essentially two types of nurse educator graduate certificate programs: post-baccalaureate certificate programs in nursing education and post-masters certificate programs in nursing education.

  • Post-baccalaureate certificate programs accept RNs who have completed a bachelors degree in nursing and who have yet to train in a nursing specialization at the graduate level. These programs will often accept MSN-trained nurses as well.
  • Post-masters or post-graduate certificate programs are for RNs, Advanced Practice Registered Nurses , and other MSN-trained nursing professionals who are interested in adding a nurse educator specialization and transitioning into nursing education.

Both types of programs are classified as graduate certificate programs in nursing education or nurse educator graduate certificate programs, and they have similar curricula, typically consisting of three to five courses that cover topics in instructional strategies, course design, student evaluation, and instructional technologies. In general, post-masters certificate programs are more common than post-BSN programs, and RNs who have not earned an MSN degree should review admissions requirements carefully to ensure prospective programs do not require at least a masters degree.

Who Can Apply To This Program+

What Is A Graduate Certificate In Nursing

There are two types of graduate certificate programs in nursing: postbaccalaureate and post-master’s. These give nurses who hold bachelor’s or master’s degrees another way to pursue a specialty or expertise.

Many nursing certificate programs focus on advanced practice areas and prepare RNs to become APRNs. Students who are already ARPNs can gain experience in an additional practice area, which opens up more career options. Other postgraduate certificate programs in nursing focus more on administration. Graduate nursing certificate programs are offered both online and on campus.

Postbaccalaureate nursing certificates require students to possess a bachelor’s degree in nursing. These certificates are usually administrative in nature. For example, you can get a postbaccalaureate nursing certificate in nursing administration, health information management, or nursing education.

Post-master’s nursing certificates require a master’s degree in nursing. These certificates often focus on APRN practice areas. For example, you can get a post-master’s nursing certificate while preparing to become a family nurse practitioner , adult-gerontology acute care nurse practitioner , pediatric nurse practitioner , or psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner .

What Can I Expect From An Online Graduate Certificate In Nursing Program

Online nursing certificate programs typically have the same requirements as on-campus programs, except that many online programs allow students to set their own schedules. Instead of meeting at a specific time, for instance, you may just need to listen to a recorded video lecture by a certain date.

Online graduate certificate programs may give students the flexibility to work and attend school at the same time. Most programs take about one year to complete and consist of 12-24 credits. Some have in-person requirements, such as labs or practicums. Be sure to check for in-person requirements before enrolling in an online program.

Many nursing certificate programs require hands-on clinical experiences, as well. Depending on the school, you may be able to complete these experiences through a healthcare provider in your area. Make sure you find out where your clinicals can be held before enrolling.
