Gateway To Offer Standalone Licensed Practical Nursing Program
In response to student and industry demand, Gateway Technical College will soon offer a standalone licensed practical nursing program on its Racine Campus beginning next year.
Students in Gateways Nursing program already have the skills to take the states LPN licensure exam through their regular coursework, and more than 97 percent do pass. However, students have asked the college for a standalone program that can offer a full range of resources for students who specifically wish to take the LPN exam, said Vicki Coyle, dean of Gateways School of Health.
Coyle says area businesses have also asked the college for a standalone program to help ensure a solid and ready workforce for this in-demand career field. The college listened and will offer the program in the fully remodeled Lincoln Center for Health Careers.
This is something we felt we needed to do, said Coyle. We will be seeking accreditation for a standalone LPN program, just like the Nursing program.
Having a separate program will allow those students to get into the workforce faster and on a very defined educational path. Some of our students work full time, so to be able to get into the workforce quicker and gain that salary is very valuable to them.
Average median pay for an LPN in Southeastern Wisconsin is about $23.40 an hour.
Finally, Coyle said that many other states will not allow someone to become licensed as an LPN unless theyve graduated from an accredited program.

Another partnership thats helped students and will continue to do so in the future is through our Advanced Manufacturing program. Actually, it was two partnerships.
The first is an initiative we partnered with Rockwell Automation to provide an intense, 14-week Advanced Manufacturing training program that provided the skills for graduates to enter this in-demand career field. Most graduates secured positions upon graduation, some earning more than $50,000 annually. The program meets Rockwells own industry training certifications, ensuring students even more that the skills they gained are the same that are needed by area companies.
The second initiative was with the Metallica All Within My Hands Foundation, which provided funding for students to take part in the Rockwell-format Advanced Manufacturing training program.
Our students responded, and I couldnt have been more proud of them. We recognized 1,347 associate degree and technical diploma graduates and 360 high school equivalency graduates.

One of the cornerstone successes for the Gateway community is our new Associate of Arts and Associate of Science liberal arts degrees. The University of Wisconsin Board of Regents paved the way for the college to begin offering for the very first time these two liberal arts degrees. This is a result of a longstanding partnership with UW-Parkside, and adding the AA and AS degrees opens new educational pathways for our students in many different ways.
