Doctor Of Nursing Practice Program

Students of Fresno State nursing program find out their course was not accredited

WELCOME! Fresno State is now offering a Doctor of Nursing Practice Progam.

The DNP is a practice-focused doctoral degree, such as the Doctor of Pharmacy , Doctor of Medicine , or Doctor of Physical Therapy , in contrast to the research-focused Doctor of Philosophy . The purpose of the DNP is to develop advanced competencies for increasingly complex practice, teaching, and leadership roles in nursing, and provide an advanced educational credential for those in practice. The changing demands of this nation’s complex healthcare environment require the highest level of scientific knowledge and practice expertise to assure quality patient outcomes.

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing recommends that the DNP should be the terminal degree for nursing practice. In addition to meeting requirements of the Essentials of Doctoral Nursing Practice outlined by AACN, students complete coursework in teaching strategies, curriculum development, and may elect to complete a nursing education practicum to prepare for faculty roles.

Our vision is to be an exceptional advanced nursing degree program that prepares nurses at a doctoral level to lead healthcare change, serve as nursing faculty, and advance healthcare throughout California’s communities.

Accreditation

The Doctor of Nursing Practice program at the California State University, Fresno is accrediated by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education .

The CSU San Marcos program is currently on schedule to accept twenty program graduates for initial classes in January 2020. A second cohort of 20 students are currently scheduled to begin in Fall 2020. A final cohort will start in Fall 2021. This schedule will ensure all program graduates have an opportunity to retain their PMHNP credential well before ANCCs five-year deadline, which expires in February 2024.

Have Former Students Been Reimbursed The Cost Of Tuition And Related Expenses Why Or Why Not

At this point, no graduate has lost their national certification. ANCC has provided a five-year period for graduates to complete an accredited program before their certificate is no longer valid. We have focused on developing a remedy and plan to assess any costs or expenses resulting from the remedy, and will reimburse graduates of all expenses.

We are currently formulating a proposed plan for remedial compensation. We will provide appropriate updates to program graduates on the status of this plan, but the University anticipates that it will need additional time before it can provide any estimate on when it can offer payments and the amount of any such payments.

It Has Been Months Since This Particular Issue Surfaced Why Is It Taking So Long To Identify And Implement Solutions For Former Students

Our Doctors

Fresno State has been actively pursuing solutions to this issue since it first surfaced in fall 2018. For example, Fresno States legal representative has been in contact with CCNE and ANCC regarding proposed alternatives to meet the expectation that an individual complete a nationally accredited PMHNP program in order to take ANCCs certification exam or retain certification.

Once the proposed alternative of having our program graduates enroll at CSU San Marcos was accepted by CCNE and ANCC, Fresno State and CSU San Marcos worked to complete a programmatic gap analysis to identify any differences in classes and clinical hours between the programs. Once these gaps were identified, CSU San Marcos has needed to develop the classes for online instruction and establish standards for completing the clinical hours for the program graduates based on an individual gap analysis. Setting up this structure has taken some time to ensure compliance with CCNEs standards.

Fresno State Regains Nursing Accreditation

Fresno State announced that the School of Nursing has regained accreditation of its masters degree nursing program after losing its accreditation due to a documentation shortfall last year.

The program lost its accreditation after the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education determined the program failed to adequately document or provide adequate supporting data of its methods for assessing and evaluating student outcomes, curriculum, clinical experiences, faculty performance and overall program goals.

On June 4 the CCNE announced it had completed full review and site study, started in September 2019, and decided to grant the program as well as grant a new accreditation of its online psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner certificate program.

I am thrilled at the news, as now more than ever it is strikingly clear how vital our nursing students are to the future well-being of our community, said Dr. Saúl Jiménez-Sandoval, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs at Fresno State. Im very grateful for Interim Dean Jim Marshalls leadership of the College of Health and Human Services at this time, and Im truly appreciative to Dr. Sylvia Miller and the nursing faculty, who put their every effort into showcasing the excellence of our programs.

Fresno State Irons Out Its Nursing Program Accreditation Issues

Fresno Pacific’s MSN, FNP Program – Soledad’s Story

Following a year of tumult in Fresno States College of Health and Human Services, the universitys School of Nursing resolved considerable accreditation problems regarding two of its programs.

Tuesday, the university announced that the nursing masters degree program regained accreditation after losing its status in June due to deficiencies in documentation requirements from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education .

At the time, CCNE determined that the masters degree program failed to adequately document or provide adequate supporting data of its methods for assessing and evaluating student outcomes, curriculum, clinical experiences, faculty performance and overall program goals. In some instances, the accrediting body noted the University had plans or policies in place to address such issues, but failed to adequately document that it had implemented its policies or plans.

Students were given the option to continue in the program while Fresno State awaited the accreditation decision, take a leave of absence, or withdraw from their programs.

All 23 students remained in the masters program, with 22 completing required coursework to earn their degrees in May.

The university has 16 additional students enrolling in the 2020-2021 school year.

In the midst of its accreditation struggles with its masters program, the university discovered that its online, psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner certificate program was operating for years without accreditation.

Can International Students Work While In The Program

International students are eligible to receive an I-20 immigration document to participate in this program. However, whether a student has Vermont RN licensure or not to begin the program, UVM is unable to authorize students for nursing employment experiences while in the Program as off-campus authorization would not be possible because of the curricular structure of our program. While limited on-campus work would be possible, the UVM Medical Center is not an on-campus employment location, so students should expect not to have any paid nursing opportunities if they come to the program as an F-1 student. Post-Graduate OPT would be an option for students completing the program. This program is not on the STEM Designated list and thus not eligible for OPT beyond one year. Further questions can be directed to internationalstudents@uvm.edu.

Education Matters: Fresno State School of Nursing

Current students: We offered a refund for the course in which the students were currently enrolled. Some students accepted the refund and others elected to remain enrolled as we expect to be fully accredited before they complete the four-semester program.

Former program graduates: When we first learned of the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s decision, we worked closely with the certifying body, ANCC, to be certain that no immediate revocation of any former students certification occurred. ANCC granted a period of five years for those who have completed our certificate program and who have passed the certification exam, to maintain their certification. The former students were directed to complete an accredited program and we have been working to provide options to our former students to meet that condition.

We are developing a program that, in collaboration with another CSU accredited PMHNP program – CSU San Marcos – will be an option for graduates who have completed our program and are required by ANCC to complete an accredited program within 5 years to maintain certification. This will be free of cost to the graduates. This program will be offered with online classes in order to eliminate any geographical difficulties for participants. Clinical sites which meet the appropriate standards may be selected at locations which are convenient for the program graduate.

Fresno State Nursing Students Informed Program They Took Was Not Accredited

College of Health and Human Services Larry Valenzuela

Several dozen Fresno State nursing students have been notified that the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program from which they received certificates was not accredited.

According to Dean of Health and Human Services Jody Hironaka-Juteau, Fresno State officials and students received notices late last year that the four-semester online Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program was not accredited.

Hironaka-Juteau said the program has been around since 2009, but accreditation wasnt required for the advanced study until 2014, affecting at least 60 students that were in the program.

According to Hironaka-Juteau, the lack of accreditation is a result of an administrative misunderstanding with the application process and requirements.

A statement released by Hironaka-Juteau and Sylvia Miller, chair of Fresno States School of Nursing, said, We are working closely with the American Nurses Credentialing Center and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education to seek remedies to address the individual situations of these former students.

Because the program was not accredited, students who received certificates must now re-enroll in a program that is accredited or risk losing their credentials, The Fresno Bee reported.
