Job Searching Strategies For Nurses
Newer nurses entering the workforce are used to the technology advances that have defined the past twenty years. Many aspects of nursing education are now online, and coursework participation can have a similar feel to social media. Additionally, many nursing programs and job networking websites are speaking directly to the younger nurse with their own social media profiles, advertising, and networking group forums.
As a result of this comfort with online technology, many job applicants are treating their job search passively.
They are scrolling job boards, hoping to be shown their ideal position, and easily clicking apply.
Applying to a job online is fairly simple, since once a résumé is uploaded and saved, it can be sent to many jobs in a small amount of time.
The Disadvantage Of Applying Online For Finding Nursing Jobs
So, do you have an advantage if you are using technology and applying to jobs online? Not necessarily.
While there are plenty of job websites and recruitment companies, various statistics report that between 40-60% of job vacancies are being filled by referral not by online candidates.
Career acquisition reports have noted that approximately 35% of vacancies are being filled by job or career sites, and 75% of the applications come in through this method.
What do these statistics show?
If you apply online, you potentially have a lot more competition for fewer opportunities.

What To Know When You Return To The Uk
If and when you decide to return to the UK to carry on your nursing career, there are certain things to consider.
Whilst you are away it is important to keep aware of healthcare and nursing developments back in the UK as this will be important to employers upon your return.
If you have completed any further qualifications in a foreign country, you must apply to the NMC to have the qualification correctly registered which may require a refresher course or additional training.
During your time abroad it is vital to keep your UK RN status, which means continuing to pay your annual registration fee to the NMC and renewing your registration every 3 years, which can be done online from anywhere in the world.

Strategies To Help Your Company Stand Out To Nurses
In this competitive marketplace, youll need to employ clever strategies to stand out and attract the best nursing candidates. Here are three to get you started:
Know what nurses want and give it to them. Nearly 300,000 nursing-related job searches happen daily on Indeed. Our data can provide insights into what nurses are searching for and what they want, which gives you an edge.
For example, our data reveals that even though 63% of nurses say theyre satisfied or very satisfied with their jobs, 87% have searched online job listings within the prior year, and 40% are actively investigating new opportunities.
Why? Due to insufficient staffing in many healthcare organizations, nurses often feel overworked and stressed, which can impact job satisfaction and provoke interest in a new position. This, in turn, offers an opportunity for employers in need of nursing staff.
You can best leverage this opportunity if you know what most nurses are looking for. According to our survey data, nurses want scheduling flexibility and work-life balance which often take priority over salary. When recruiting nurses, highlight these benefits along with opportunities for growth, training and upward mobility at your organization.
According to a hospital manager, the program breaks up the monotony and gives nurses more flexibility without forfeiting any of their seniority. And, as mentioned above, flexibility and balance are highly valued in the nursing world.

Screen Your Pacu Nurse Applicants
Send screening questions via email.
Job seekers often overlook job requirements and apply anyway. Weed out the unqualified ones by sending out a short email that asks a few basic questions, such as:
- How long have you worked as a nurse?
- Are you licensed in the state?
- Are you available to work on weekends?
This way, they cannot ignore your questions. If you’re worried that your applicants may not be responsive to an email, you may want to try delegating someone to make short phone calls to ask these questions.
Verify each candidates licensing.
You’ll want to verify two licenses. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing has a national database for the verification of nurse licensures. Search the NCSBN database to confirm your candidates’ registration as nurses. To verify their Certified Post Anesthesia Nurse credentials, check the American Board of Perianesthesia Nursing Certification’s website.

Is There Really A Nursing Shortage
When youre thinking about finding a nursing job, its easy to assume that getting a nursing job should be easy, especially with the buzz-phrase of nursing shortage over the past 10-20 years. Both the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Institute of Medicine have projected the need for large growth of the nursing profession.
This is due to Baby Boomers reaching old age, which leads to more older adults needing healthcare as well as more nurses retiring. As a result, organizations such as the American Association of Colleges of Nursing have supported initiatives to make nursing education more accessible and to increase enrollment.
However, calling this a nursing shortage is not entirely accurate. The Nursing Executive Council Advisory Board has redefined the nursing shortage as an Experience-Complexity Gap. Their report suggests that there are more new, inexperienced nurses entering the workforce as the patients are getting sicker. As newer nurses graduate and prepare to enter the workforce, health care organizations are wanting more experienced nurses to replace retirees and care for an increasingly sicker patient population.
This experience gap can create challenges for nurses looking for jobs, especially nurses who are more novice in their careers.
