Registered Nurse Job Activities
Registered nurses are the largest occupation in the medical delivery system. RNs practice in numerous different medical settings, such as Catonsville MD hospitals, private practices, outpatient clinics, nursing homes and even schools. Their primary duty is to aid doctors in the treatment of their patients. However, the specific duties of a registered nurse will be dependent on their job or area of expertise along with where they work. A portion of the functions of an RN may include:
- Providing medications
- Managing LPNs, LVNs and nurse aides
- Informing patients and their families
- Maintaining health records and charts
Nurses with a higher degree may have more advanced job duties and accountabilities. Nurse practitioners , for example, must hold a Master’s Degree and often work more independently than their RN counterparts. They can deliver primary or specialty care services, prescribe medications, and diagnose and treat basic illnesses or injuries.

ACM EVENING NURSING PROGRAM EXPANDED IN RESPONSE TO SHORTAGE
CUMBERLAND, Md. Allegany College of Maryland is doubling the number of nursing students in its evening cohort. Beginning in January 2022, the college will accept 40 students into its two-year academic training program. Applications are due by September 30.
Application information, including instructions for taking the nursing entrance test, the HESI A2 entrance exam, are available online at allegany.edu/nursing/nursing-application. Classes are held Monday through Thursday from 4 to 10 p.m. with the possibility for daytime clinical hours.
Because of its popularity with students and the regions demand for well-trained and skilled nurses, its a highly selective program to enter. Students with higher HESI A2 scores tend to have higher admission ranking scores, so we recommend that program applicants schedule time to study and take practice tests.
