Interdisciplinary Program Aims To Create Compassionate Clinicians And Leaders Committed To Health Care Equity

Wheaton College has launched a new four-year bachelor of science in nursing degree program that aspires to fill the increasing demand for nurses and address widespread inequities in health care.

In keeping with Wheatons historical commitment to social justice and desire to better meet the needs of underserved populations locally and globally, the new program will provide students with a collaborative, interdisciplinary liberal arts education that emphasizes the strength of diversity, equity and inclusion in health care, and equips them to become problem-solving leaders.

Wheatons program is dedicated to preparing future nurses to take on the modern-day challenges of patient-centered care across practices, cultures and different settings, said Colette Dieujuste, Wheatons inaugural dean of nursing who led the development of the program, curriculum and learning spaces.

Everyone deserves equal health care services when we can provide health care in an equitable way, that is social justice, she said.

The program, which will have its first class of students in fall 2023, includes nursing and non-nursing courses, and students will be able to pursue an elective concentration in global health, health justice or health care administration. The concentrations will introduce students to health care management, statistics and intervention issues to improve care and gain perspective on the most empathetic and effective nursing.

Dual Degree Programs At Wheaton College

A dual degree program allows a student to study and earn two degrees at the same time. A 3-2 dual degree program is a five-year program wherein the first three years are spend taking undergraduate courses and the final two years are spent taking graduate courses. Upon completion of the 5 years, the student will be awarded two degrees, a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree.

Position Summary

The Dean of Nursing of the Wheaton College Nursing Program is a 12-month contract position, reviewed yearly and renewable each year based on satisfactory performance. The Dean is a staff position that holds faculty status as a non-teaching and non-tenured faculty member. This individual is employed by the college and reports to the Office of the Provost. The Dean is vested with the administrative authority for the development and oversight of the BSN program, as well as the hiring and evaluation of nursing faculty to accomplish the mission, goals, and expected program outcomes. The Dean has advising responsibilities and ensures academic rigor and curricular alignment with the overall vision, mission, expected outcomes of the college, as well as with the AACN Baccalaureate Essentials and the standards of the appropriate Boards of Nursing and of the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education .

Involuntary Leave Of Absence

It is the policy of Wheaton College to foster a campus environment that is conducive to learning, promote the College’s educational purposes, maintain reasonable order, and protect the rights and physical safety of all members of the College community. In extraordinary circumstances, the College may place a student on an involuntary leave of absence or take other appropriate action for reasons of personal or community safety. What Will You Learn In Wheaton Colleges Nursing Degree Program

The first nursing course is taught in the first semester and the remainder of the first year of study will include global health, biology, nutrition and chemistry. Because the nursing degree program will have a focus on community health, the required first-year experience course will focus on community health.

Starting in the second year of the program liberal arts, humanities, and the sciences will be interspersed with required nursing courses. Clinical experiences will commence in the second semester of the second year. As specified in the Wheaton curriculum, 32 course credits are required for the degree . Wheaton requires 32 course credits for degree conferral with 16 of these outside of the discipline. In this program, 14 course credits are in the discipline of nursing. Eighteen course credits will be taken outside of the nursing major, including course offerings in biology, chemistry, English, psychology, statistics and global/public health. One of the two electives offered in the spring of the junior year will position students for a global or domestic travel opportunity focused on social justice and vulnerable populations.

Students may choose to pursue a minor or one of Wheatons honor programs.
