Student’s Fascination Fuels Published Medical Research

Roanoke College student Vasilea Karageorge ’18 has helped bring the medical field one step closer to stopping breast cancer. Scientific Reports, a science research journal, published an article that Karageorge co-authored about BRCA1 genes whose mutations are linked to breast cancer and ovarian cancer. Karageorge’s work at the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute in Roanoke resulted in new information about the structure of mutating BRCA1 genes, which makes decoding the gene a little less challenging and lengthy, and more accurate.

“If we can understand why this mutation leads to cancer, we can, in the long run, determine more efficient ways to combat it,” Karageorge said. “Breast cancer has fascinated me from a young age. I know many women close to me who have had breast cancer,” Karageorge said.

“We may not have found a cure yet, but we have definitely made progress and are closer than we ever have been.”

School Of Nursing History

In 1966, Radford College was approved by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia and the Virginia Board of Nursing to develop a nursing program. The first students were admitted to the undergraduate program in 1969. Eleven members of the charter class graduated in 1973, and the program was granted initial accreditation by the National League for Nursing in 1976.

In 1979, Radford College was granted university status and, following a rapid growth period, the nursing program gained school status in 1982 and college status in 1984. Based on a needs assessment conducted by the Western Region Consortium for Continuing Higher Education, a track for registered nurse students was initiated in the fall of 1986. Off-site classes were established in select regions of Southwestern Virginia using a variety of distance education technology . Then in 1988, the Roanoke Higher Education Center site was established through an agreement between Radford University and Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

The School of Nursing continues to grow – in the number of students, faculty, programs, and, ultimately, patients we impact in our region and across the nation. We continue to evolve our educational programs in response to the health care needs, delivery mechanisms, and technology advancements in the region, Commonwealth, nation, and world.

Registered Nurse Job Functions

New Jefferson College program addresses nursing shortage with Veteran program

Registered nurses are the largest occupation in the medical delivery system. RNs practice in numerous different medical settings, such as Roanoke VA hospitals, family practices, outpatient clinics, nursing homes and even schools. Their basic role is to assist doctors in the treatment of their patients. However, the particular duties of a registered nurse will depend on their job or specialization in addition to where they work. A few of the functions of an RN may include:

  • Administering medications
  • Managing LPNs, LVNs and nurse aides
  • Educating patients and their families
  • Keeping health records and charts

Nurses with a higher degree may have more complex job duties and responsibilities. Nurse practitioners , for instance, must hold a Masters Degree and often work more independently than their RN counterparts. They can deliver primary or specialty care services, prescribe medications, and diagnose and treat common illnesses or injuries.
