How Do You Submit Your Scores To Schools
During registration, the ETS asks students to choose higher learning institutions to receive scores. Learners can add or remove recipients until 10 p.m. the night before the exam.
The ETS automatically sends these scores to the institutions. After the exam, students can pay a fee to have the ETS send scores to additional schools.
What Gpa Do You Need For Nursing Grad School
Graduate nursing schools typically require a 2.75 GPA, and highly competitive schools require a 3.5 GPA minimum. With this in mind, other factors determine acceptance or rejection. A graduate program takes all of a student’s test scores, letters of recommendation, and leadership roles into account. GPA is just one indicator of how well a student would fit into the nursing program.
What Is A Good Gre Score
When considering your GRE score goal, look at the requirements at the school in which you are applying. This will inform you of a baseline goal to try to score at or above. Since the mean score for verbal reasoning is 151, the mean score for quantitative reasoning is 153, and the mean score for the analytical writing section is 4.0, this means that any score equal to or above this mean is considered a good score for nursing graduate school.
For example, Vanderbilt Universitys Family Nurse Practitioner program requires a minimum score of 153 in both of the verbal and quantitative sections and a 4.5 in the analytical writing assessment section. These scores, however, are not set in stone. A student can score a 150/150/4.0 on the GRE but have a 4.0 GPA which may give them more clout when applying. Each school will post minimums, but generally, any score over 150 and 4.0 is considered a good score. Ultimately, it depends on the interview and acceptance committees standards and other candidates applying. Schools labelled as more prestigious often require GRE scores in order to be more competitive.
The following Universities do require GRE scores for masters programs in nursing:
- Vanderbilt University
- Ohio State University
- Harvard University

What’s The Difference Between Your Scaled Score And Your Percentile Rank
The grades of 0-6 and 130-170 are a student’s scaled scores. Test-takers also receive their percentile ranks, which help put the scaled scores into context.
Percentile ranks show learners where they rank against their peers. For example, a student with the percentile rank of 95 did better on the section than 95% of fellow test-takers and scores lower than about five percent. Such a score shows nursing programs that the applicant has a high skill level in the relevant section.

Online Np Program Specializations And Gre Requirements
The NP designation represents a specialization within the larger classification of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses , which encompasses Clinical Nurse Specialists , Certified Nurse Midwifes , and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists , as well as NPs. There are NP specialties and online NP programs provide both general advanced practice training and focused training in an NP specialization. NP specializations include:
- Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner
- Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner
- Family Nurse Practitioner
- Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner
- Pediatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner
- Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
- Womens Health Nurse Practitioner

While choosing a specialization is an important part of becoming an NP and can have significant career implications, it is typically not a factor that determines whether or not a program requires the GRE for admission and there is little correlation between GRE policies and NP specializations among online programs at the masters, post-masters certificate, and doctorate levels.

Overwhelmed What To Do When Your Np Program Becomes Too Much
I follow many nursing blogs and frequently have readers contact me seeking advice on how to make it through their NP programs. I have observed one major theme in my online interactions with other nurse practitioners and NP students: a lot of us are overwhelmed. Making it through your nurse practitioner program is frustrating, time consuming and challenging. The fast pace of the NP education can leave you feeling as if you are drowning. So how do you make it through?
Based on my own personal experiences as a nurse practitioner student and the fact that I was able to complete my NP program without completely losing my mind , I would like to offer a few words of advice to struggling NP students.
1. Have Reasonable Expectations of Your Performance
Now that the school year is in full swing you are probably balancing clinicals, paper writing and test taking. Thanksgiving break cannot come soon enough. Take your work one thing at a time. Swamped with a list of questions you scrawled down during your busy day at the clinic? Ignore most of them and pick the 2 or 3 that you feel are most important. Dont waste your time looking up things that are probably insignificant. Did you tell yourself you would do 2 hours of independent study every day so you can become a more proficient practitioner? Well, you might not make hit your goal everyday. A very wise high school teacher I once had drew the following table in teaching me to prioritize:
3. Make Time for Yourself

Masters of Fine Arts programs often waive or dont prioritize GRE scores. Although you may not need to provide GRE scores to an institution, you may be required to provide a portfolio of your creative work as it is critical for an MFAs admissions process.
Does My Undergraduate Degree Matter
While your undergraduate degree does not necessarily have to be in the same department or field as your graduate studies, you may have some prerequisite experience and/or course work to make up for before entering grad school, according to Idealist. Experience in the field or passing a course exam in the subject you want to study could be accepted in lieu of an undergraduate degree, depending on your school and program choice.
Some institutions allow students to take required courses during the first year of grad school, while others require students to have all prerequisite courses completed prior to enrolling in their programs. For a more specific answer to this question, its best to check in with a representative from the school you have your sights set on.

Many FNP programs will also look at a students cumulative GPA when evaluating whether or not they are a good candidate for their program. What Is A Nurse Practitioner
First off, let’s get into what a nurse practitioner is and what they do. Nurse Practitioners are masters-level educated nurses who work as practitioners in a variety of specialties, from womens health to surgical to cardio, and everything in between.
Many times, the average nurse practitioner student has been practicing as a registered nurse for 10 years or so, explained Ken Miller, the former president of the AANP. They just get to a point in their career that they want more autonomy. There is just such a need for this profession because of the Affordable Care Act.
Miller added that between 30 and 40 million more people have been added to the primary care system after finally getting health insurance. But no single discipline can handle that. So, the nurse practitioners are picking up a lot of that primary care that needs to be done, he said. They also can own their own clinics. In fact, there are 250,000 nurse-owned and managed clinics across the country.
Working as a nurse practitioner is so desirable that the U.S. News & World Report ranked the profession as #2 Best Health Care Job of 2021 and #3 in the 100 Best Jobs overall in 2021.

Would Your Application Benefit From Gre Scores
If the nurse practitioner schools you want to apply to do not require the GRE, consider taking the exam to further enhance your application. Many graduate schools prefer or even require applicants to take the GRE if they are not meeting all the required criteria in their application, such as a low GPA. Contact an admissions counselor to find out if the school would find you a better applicant by taking the GRE.
Also, take into consideration whether your score from the GRE will continue to add to your application or detract causing further concerns for admission counselors. Some schools have minimum acceptable required GRE scores for each section of the exam that needs to be met for admission into their NP program. This is another topic to research and discuss with the admissions counselor of each NP school you are applying to.
Are There Any Np Programs That Do Not Require The Gre For Admission
Graduate nursing programs have high standards for admission. However, that does not mean that they always require GRE scores as part of the application process. Many schools base their admissions decisions on other criteria instead.
Some advanced nursing programs never ask for GRE scores. The universities just dont require them. Instead, they consider GPA, work experience, letters of recommendation and other factors when admitting students.
There are other schools that do ask for test scores, but they frequently make exceptions. These exceptions are called waivers and may be granted for:
- High undergraduate GPA
- Previous graduate degrees
What Scores Will Schools See If You Take The Test More Than Once
Many learners choose to take the test more than once to optimize their scores. The ETS provides the ScoreSelect Option for these students. Test-takers can designate whether the ETS should send all previous scores, only the most recent results, or only grades from specific dates.
Students can choose among these options before their exam or after, which helps applicants put their best scores forward.
How Is The Gre Scored
Graders give the analytical writing section of each exam a score between 0 and 6. Professionals read the essays and rate each one based on factors, such as critical thinking, coherence, and structure. They then round the score to the nearest half-point interval.
Both the quantitative and verbal reasoning sections receive grades of 130-170. This score accounts for the number of questions a student answers correctly and the difficulty of the questions.
Instead of giving all students the same questions, the computer-based GRE relies on section-level adaptation to provide a more personalized test. This means that the better a test-taker does on one section, the harder the following section of the same type will be.
So, if a student performs well on the first verbal reasoning section, the second one will have more challenging questions. The grading system gives allowances for that difficulty level.
Students who take the paper-based GRE do not have adaptive tests, which means that the score is based mostly on the number of correct answers.

Masters Programs That Dont Require The Gre Or Gmat
There are many universities and colleges that allow students to get a Masters degree without having to take the GRE or GMAT. However, where GRE scores are necessary may vary depending on the particular school or major you decide to study. For example, many educational majors may not call for GRE scores, though STEM majors may. By not taking the GRE or GMAT, students are able to prioritize a universitys other requisite standards. When deciphering whether or not pursuing a Masters without a GRE or GMAT at a university is for you, asses the standards and requirements of the university.
