The Purpose Of The Review
The overall purpose of this review is to gain a deeper theoretical insight into how the use of simulation affects learning to promote the educational use of simulation as an integral part of the bachelors program in nursing. It is part of a larger research project focusing on professional development at the department of nursing of a large regional university in Norway. Moreover, the project is affiliated with a research group at the department of nursing science that highlights innovative and practice-based research to educate future-oriented nurses. The cocreation of knowledge is one of this universitys overarching visions as it strives to develop and implement future-oriented, varied, student-centered, and practice-based teaching and learning methods at all levels of instruction. In accordance with this vision, SBL has for many years been an established method of learning as a supplement to traditional teaching. On the basis of challenges, such as an increasing intake of students, it is anticipated that SBL will be used to an even greater extent as an integrated part of the curriculum.

Implications For Nursing Education
This reviews findings highlight the value of simulation as a powerful tool in teaching leadership and management courses as well as the potential of enhancing certain leadership and management skills among nursing students. Amidst the increasing challenges being confronted in this regard by faculty, the incorporation of simulation into nursing management and leadership courses has the potential to enhance students skills pertaining to delegation, problem-solving and decision-making, communication and teamwork. Incorporation of simulation-based activities in nursing management, leadership courses and other nursing courses may be useful in the translation of theoretical knowledge into nursing practice. In doing so, nursing schools should ensure that nursing faculty have leadership expertise and are able to provide relevant leadership and management simulation courses or trainings to better support the learning needs of the pre-licensure nursing students. In addition, simulation resources should be provided to create a more realistic scenario necessary to deliver the intended learning outcomes.
Cynthia M Shum Dnp Med Rn Chse
Cynthia M. Shum, DNP, MEd, RN, CHSE-A, is the Nurse Educator and Simulationist at the VA hospital in Palo Alto. In this position she is responsible for the operations of the center, facilitation of simulation activities throughout the hospital and development of new uses for simulation activities.
Dr. Shum received her DNP at USF studying faculty development in healthcare simulation under the supervision of Dr. KT Waxman. She obtained her undergraduate degree in 1987 from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada and a Masters degree in Education with a focus on Measurement and Evaluation and specifically research methodologies in 1991.
Dr. Shum is an adjunct faculty at USF and presents at numerous simulation conferences.

Acquisition Of Skills Or Understanding Of Delegation
Five studies determined the impact of simulation-based learning on nursing students acquisition of delegation skills and/or understanding of delegation.24,25,29,32,34 Hourican et al. assessed the usefulness of simulation in promoting management skills in senior nursing students using high-fidelity mannequins and standardised patients.34 Overall, nursing students reported higher levels of awareness and understanding in the following competencies: prioritising and managing staff workloads, effective delegation and maintaining patient safety. In Australia, students who were exposed to high-fidelity simulation expressed that the simulation experiences improved their skills in prioritising, delegation and time management.32 Three studies in the USA yielded similar outcomes.24,25,29 Nursing students who experienced simulation scenarios using medium-fidelity simulators and standardised patients obtained higher scores on delegation subscales when compared to those in non-simulation groups.25 Similarly, an increased knowledge and higher confidence levels on delegating patient care and prioritising were seen in senior nursing students after simulation exposure.29 In a descriptive qualitative study by Kilgore et al., three essential themes emerged from the nursing student simulation evaluations: the nursing students felt that the experience was convincing, it fostered their ability to delegate and reinforced leadership and management concepts.24

Samantha supports the CSA during weekend and evening hours as she is a full time virtual counselor at Nightingale College in Salt Lake City, Utah. She and her husband Brian, a Simulation Operations Specialist at Alameda Health System in Oakland, have 5 year old daughter named Olive and a 2 year old son named Meyer.

Jayne Josephsen Celebrates Publication Of Manuscript To The Clinical Simulation In Nursing Journal
Jayne Josephsen, associate professor for the School of Nursing, is celebrating the publication of her manuscript, Cognitive Load Measurement, Worked-Out Modeling, and Simulation, in the October 2018 peer reviewed journal Clinical Simulation in Nursing.
For this project, Josephsen studied the implementation of worked-out modeling in the briefing of students prior to simulation in order to measure post-simulation knowledge and cognitive load experienced. Josephsen defines WOM as the modelling of a skill or procedure by a registered nurse paired with the verbal and gestural description of the critical thinking processes.
Josephsen conducted the study by using a sample of 61 senior-level nursing students who had previously participated in a simulation. The 61 students were split into two test groups one was a controlled group and the other a treatment group. The controlled group performed the usual pre-simulation reading assignment, went through usual briefing, orientation, and question/answer time prior to simulation. The treatment group of students went through the same pre-simulation preparation but it was shortened to also allow the showing of a 10-minute WOM video that contained an expert nurse performing the simulation and providing a verbal description of the thinking processes.

The Future Of Simulation In Nursing Education
> Nursing science and art constitutes a highly significant and integral part of the health care system. Nurses and their training are fundamental elements of the effectiveness of the system therefore, special attention is paid and must be paid. Any changes in the training of nurses are interwoven with technological advances, and their training is directly affected by any technological means available for teaching.
The use of simulation as an educational strategy represents a great challenge for nursing education. Simulation may improve health care and patient safety. No patient who is alive is put at risk at the expense of the trainee. Simulation provides standardization of cases, promotes critical thinking, allows supervision of patient care, provides immediate feedback, and helps students to assimilate knowledge and experience. It is an ideal composition learning experience .
Probably the greatest change in nursing education is the introduction of virtual simulation. Continuation and development of virtual simulation constitutes a focal point for nursing science and for the progress of nursing students. This requires investment of funds in the establishment of appropriate laboratories by nursing schools, time for simulation as provided for in the curricula, and educators who are properly trained to create various scenarios and operate simulators.

Benefits Of Patient Simulation In Nursing Education
Simulation, as an evidence-based educational technique and process, firstly appeared when it became difficult for nurses working in a hospital to acquire clinical experiences. Simulation helps to address any limitations related to the clinical setting , promote teamwork and solidarity among students, and implementation of a protocol for the attainment of a skill. It is based on a scenario, where learning becomes interactive, allows feedback between the educator and the other members of the team, and promotes clinical reasoning and critical thinking in the team .
The majority of students are familiar with advanced computer technology and computer games. As a result, there is relative comfort with certain types of simulation using computers, mainly in providing audio and video feedback in real time, thus helping a student even more to perform a skill. The controlled and totally safe setting of a laboratory that a professor may operate, constitutes another factor leading a student to success and knowledge. In addition, an activity may be interrupted for discussion and correction and be continued later. Video recording of a skill significantly contributes to the evaluation of an activity by both the student and the professor .
Simulation Modality And Scenario
In this review, patient/clinical case scenarios employing high-fidelity mannequins, medium-fidelity simulators, low-fidelity simulators and used standardised patients during simulation. Simulation scenarios involved handling and caring for patients with various medical and surgical conditions including obstetric and gynaecologic, psychiatric, paediatric and gerontology patients. In articles with a control group, low- or medium-fidelity simulations or traditional clinical placements or demonstrations were used.

She led Kaiser Permanentes National Risk Education and Healthcare Simulation Programs for 10 years. Ms. Lopez has 13 years experience researching and implementing interactive educational programs in the clinical setting and has focused much of this work on improving teamwork and communication of practicing clinicians. Connie has presented perinatal, patient safety and simulation related topics nationally and internationally over the past ten years. - Debriefing was helpful for making connections between theory and real-life situations related to holistic nursing care.
- The debriefing session allowed the students to reflect on and identify the connections between vital signs and nursing assessment as well as among four scenarios using the same learning outcomes, all as part of holistic nursing care.

Barbara has helped to guide the center to its current state of the art facility through visioning and collaborative work with team members across the university, and the generous donations of community members. The Clinical Simulation Center operates under the School of Health and Natural Sciences, with a focus upon serving students training to be Nurses, Physician Assistants, and Occupational Therapists.
