Aspiring nurses in Pennsylvania may choose one of three different career paths. Each path focuses on a distinct type of healthcare expertise, requires a different length of education, and carries unique licensing requirements. Depending on a prospective nurses level of dedication and interest, she can choose to become a certified nursing assistant , licensed practical nurse , or registered nurse . A nursing assistant provides direct intimate care to her patients, especially those who are no longer able to care for their own daily needs. The road to becoming a CNA is shorter than other nursing career paths most students can complete the certificate program in just a few months. There are a total of 74,520 CNAs employed in Pennsylvania, with a median annual salary of $27,330.

Prerequisites Nsg/nsl 212 & Nsg/nsl 311 Or 312

Prerequisite to NSG/NSL 212 students must:

Complete BIO 100, CHE 107, CRL 107, BIO 259, and BIO 269 with a minimum composite GPA of 2.75 in these courses.

*In addition to the above required coursework, the courses listed below are prerequisites to NSG/NSL 311 and 312. If most prerequisite coursework is not completed prior to the application submission, applicants may be denied entry into the nursing program due to the inability to ensure progression into the junior level nursing courses.

Prerequisite to NSG/NSL 311 or 312 students must:

Complete WRT 120 WRT 200, 204, 205, 206, 208 or 220 BIO 204 NSG 310, NTD 303, PSY 100, SOC 200, PSY 210 or HEA 206, and MAT 121 with a minimum of a C- in these courses.

Prior to junior year clinical placement , the student will complete all required documentation as required by the State Board of Nursing. Students will receive more information on this process during NSG/NSL 212. Failure to successfully complete all clearance processes will result in the removal of nursing courses from the student schedule.

    • The Chester County Intermediate Unit Practical Nursing Program is a post-secondary program that prepares you to pass the NCLEX-PN: National Council Licensure Examination for Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurses, allowing you a faster entry into the nursing profession and opportunities for future growth and education in the field.

      The CCIU Practical Nursing Program focuses on preparing students to become an LPN. According to the National League for Nursing, LPNs play a significant role in meeting the needs of older adults and other vulnerable groups.     Probation Parole & Pretrial Services

    Internships can be a valuable asset to our Department while providing a practical education in probation and parole to students. The placement, by its nature, is not a highly structured experience: it is designed to be flexible to meet the needs of the Department, its clientele, and the student.

    Student interns are regarded as professionals during the placement and are expected to conduct themselves appropriately. This includes being able to identify their developmental needs, and to adhere to the conduct of professional ethics.

    Most internships are in the Supervision Units, working with Probation/Parole Officers as they perform their normal duties. While this is the most common placement, a limited number of internships are possible in special program or research related areas. Arrangements will be handled on an individual basis between the student and the Department. Any special interests, needs or limitations should be noted at the time formal application for placement is made.

    Each assignment may vary. The following are various tasks that may be assigned:

    • General travel and observation of Probation and Parole Officers
    • Small caseload responsibility
    • Observation of hearings Assist with classification process
    • Assist with pre-parole investigations
    • Completion of surveys, research, etc.
    • Assist in other administrative duties

    To be considered for an internship, students must be enrolled in a formal for-credit internship/practicum class with their college or university.

    Nurse Home Visiting Programs

    Chester County Health Department offers a variety of nurse home visiting services to pregnant and parenting families with a focus on health assessment, health education, and promotion of infant development. These services are free of cost to clients. Women can enroll during pregnancy or after they have their baby.

    The Nurse Family Partnership is a special program for young mothers who are having their first baby. Nurse visits occur during pregnancy and until the child turns two. The nurse focuses on supporting new parents and answering their many questions about childbirth and raising a child. This program is supported by federal and state funding and a variety of local funders including Phoenixville Community Health Foundation and United Way of Chester County.

    The Title V Healthy Moms, Healthy Families program is a nurse home visiting program for pregnant and parenting mothers and their children with the flexibility to serve a wide population of families pregnant moms who have had a previous child, postpartum moms, and families with an infant/toddler with special healthcare needs. The program is also flexible in terms of frequency and length of service, depending on the needs and desires of the family. Visits typically occur monthly during pregnancy and for 3-6 months postpartum. This program is supported with PA Department of Health funding.

    • How long is the program?This varies among students and is based on prior coursework, and the ability to complete the program on a part time or full time basis. Once pre-requisite courses are complete, the core nursing coursework can be completed in three semesters . Keep in mind, everyone must complete 120 credits to earn a BSN.
    • Can I manage work and this program?This program was developed with the working nurse in mind. Most of our students work full-time and have the ability to balance work, school and family responsibilities.

    • What credits transfer?Most nursing program coursework and general education requirements will transfer. The registrar will review and determine transfer equivalencies.
