The Department of Health, Bureau of Vital Statistics looks forward to supporting and welcoming Autonomous Advanced Practice Registered Nurses as online users of the states Electronic Death Registration System . Completion of the death certificate is critical to families when their loved one passes away and becoming an online EDRS certifier is easy and free. The Bureau of Vital Statistics has an online tutorial and training tools that will educate AAPRNs on their roles and responsibilities in certifying death certificates. Expanding Nurse Practitioner Practice Status
In 2010, full practice status became the recommended model by the Institute of Medicine and the National Council for State Boards of Nursing. Not all states, however, are on board with the measure 27 continue to mandate reduced or restricted practice regulations for nurse practitioners. While the guidelines for reduced and restricted practice regulations are slightly different depending on location, both require NPs to have either a signed collaboration agreement with a physician or direct oversight from a physician. Not all states require the physician to be physically present or even in the same building with the NP during patient care, but they should be available by phone or email.
Despite aggressive opposition from the medical community, new and changing legal policies indicate that lawmakers are looking closely at the NPs role in expanding coverage to underserved areas and easing the burden on the dwindling number of primary care physicians who remain calling the NP role necessary for long-term health care.
Additionally, states arent the only entities moving to dismantle practice barriers: In 2016, the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs issued a proposal that would permit full practice authority of all VA advanced practice registered nurses when they are acting within the scope of their VA employment.

Florida has 18,000 nurse practitioners, and it graduates another 300 to 500 in-state each year. These are highly trained healthcare providers who are adept at diagnosing illnesses, prescribing medicines, and treating diseases in both acute and primary care settings. Studies have repeatedly shown that qualified NPs provide safe and effective care thats equal to that of physicians.
Many people still dont understand what we do, Dr. Hays says. But for more than 50 years, nurse practitioners have been taking care of patients, demonstrating excellent outcomes, and achieving high levels of patient satisfaction.
Florida is one of several states that still restricts an NPs ability to practice to the full extent of their education and training. This manifests mainly in supervisory requirements, which necessitate a physicians approval for certain procedures and prescriptions. Rarely is a physician actually on-site to validate individual decisions, thus creating an extra level of bureaucracy that hampers the quick and effective treatment of an NPs patients.
The states that have restricted practice authority for NPs, those are the states that have the worst health outcomesand those are the states that are spending the most money, Dr. Hays says. Those numbers dont lie.

All Florida-licensed LPNs, RNs, and APRNs are now in a 24-month renewal cycle and must complete 24 hours of appropriate continuing education during each renewal period. Who can perform botulinum toxin injections and soft tissue fillers?
Any doctor can do cosmetic services in his/her primary care practice no specialized background in dermatology or plastic surgery is required. PA and NPs can order and perform injections.
Under Florida Law in a med spa or an aesthetic center that isnt a doctors primary office the NP or PA must be supervised by a board certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon, though they dont have to be present. This does not apply to non-med spa or aesthetic centers or independent practitioners.
RNs and Medical Assistants cannot inject Botox and/or fillers even if a physician is present. NPS and PAs are allowed to perform these procedures under protocols written and reviewed by the supervising physician.
