College Of Nursing Students Partner With Jessye Norman School Of The Arts

Community is what you make it.

Community is working together to lift each other up.

Our responsibility doesnt stop at the four walls of the hospital.

Augusta University Master of Science in Nursing Clinical Nurse Leader students shared these sentiments after their community project presentations.

The College of Nursing students worked with Jessye Norman School of the Arts after meeting with Executive Director Gary Dennis to determine their Integrated Healthcare class project focus: availability and access to health care and mental health care for the population the school serves.

Partnering with Gary through our community health project, it answers the question of why our group chose to be in nursing, said student Brandon Jones. Often we encounter patients in the hospital and see a diagnosis without the full story that led to a patients situation. This opportunity allowed us to identify the circumstances that many members of our surrounding community face every day that led to the reasons we encounter patients in the hospital.

Jessye Norman School of the Arts was started in the Sunday school rooms of St. Johns Methodist Church in 2003 as an after-school program and has sustained substantial growth in its nearly 20 years of operation. The program that started with one administrative assistant and a part-time director now has 25 staff members and serves more than 1,200 students and their families each year.

Graduation Week : College Of Nursing Graduate Finally Finds His Career Path

If you ask Brian Nafarrete, working in health care was bound to happen eventually.

After moving to the area from California in 2001, Nafarrete graduated from Greenbrier High School and then went to Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He said the adjustment to college life was challenging, using a preparation for an exam as a prime example of just how different things were.

The tests werent the same It wasnt multiple choice anymore like it was in high school. I remember my first exam for a political science class, I was quizzing a friend of mine just before the exam about historical dates and this guy interrupted me and said, The test isnt going to be like that, said Nafarrete, who will graduate Dec. 10 from Augusta Universitys College of Nursing with a Master of Science in Nursing with a concentration in clinical nurse leader. It was more essay-based and you had to take the information you knew and weave it all together.

He graduated from Georgetown with a Bachelor of Arts in History, but he still wasnt sure what he wanted to do. One idea had been on his mind for a while, however, because at the beginning of his time in D.C., he had an encounter with God that he said was life-altering.

I went to Georgetown thinking about politics and left thinking about something else, Nafarrete said. A couple of years after graduating, I was grappling with the thought of going into seminary. Finally, I decided Id go for it.

Au Names New Dean Of Nursing

Dr. Tanya Sudia, the associate dean for research and scholarship at Baylor University’s School of Nursing, will become dean Jan. 1. She replaces Dr. Lucy Marion, who has been dean of the nursing school since 2004 and is retiring this fall.

The new dean received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from the University of Akron and received her master’s degree and doctorate from Emory University, where she taught for 19 years in the School of Nursing. Sudia also taught at the Mercer University Georgia Baptist College School of Nursing before going to Baylor, according to the school. She has also worked at a number of Atlanta hospitals, including Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Grady Memorial and West Paces Ferry.

Sudia was chosen from a national search and emerged from a strong field of candidates not only on credentials and experience but also on how she fit with the position, AU Provost Gretchen Caughman said.

“We knew this was a really important recruitment to follow in Lucys footsteps and to continue the trajectory that the College of Nursing has really enjoyed for many years now, she said. “She has broad experience she also has Georgia roots in terms of experience with both Emory and Mercer. Shes a very clinically oriented nurse with that kind of experience, but she also has helped the Baylor School of Nursing advance in terms of its research, which it had not had as a position before. All of those things are really key to us in terms of how we move forward.”
