Betty Baines Compton: Pioneer Family Nurse Practitioner
In the 1960s, the crossroads community of Prospect Hill, North Carolina lost its only physician. Dr. Warren had spent decades treating hundreds of families in rural Caswell and Orange Counties. Citizens of the area organized themselves, raised money to create a clinic and advertised for another physician to come to their town. No one answered the call.
As luck would have it, health care leaders from the departments of nursing, medicine and public health at the nearby University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill were creating a new program to address the problem of physician shortages in rural North Carolina. In the fall of 1970, they began the third Family Nurse Practitioner program in the country. Seven nurses enrolled in this grand experiment to expand their skills to include diagnosing and treating common health problems in a community health setting. One of those settings would be the new Prospect Hill Community Health Center, the first community health center in North Carolina. Orange County public health nurse Betty Compton would be one of those pioneering nurses.
The trailblazers who were establishing the FNP program at UNC Chapel Hill wanted to recruit students were When the opportunity arose to become a Family Nurse Practitioner and help her extended family members and neighbors through the Prospect Hill Community Health Center, Compton jumped at the chance.

What Is The Class Schedule/length For The Associate Degree In Nursing Program
The Associate Degree Nursing program is offered during the day and takes five semesters to complete. Students participate in classroom, laboratory, and clinical experiences throughout the week. Graduates of the program are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Exam . The NC Board of Nursing will review the criminal background checks of each person applying for licensure. Applicants can be denied licensure based on this review. Applicants may take the general education/related coursework for the ADN program prior to acceptance to the program. Please note that taking these courses does not shorten the program length, but it does lighten ones course load each semester after acceptance into the program.

One of the most well-received sessions at the 2014 Nurse Practitioner Spring Symposium was Wisdom and Stories from NCs First NPs, a lively discussion about the history of nurse practitioners. Panelists laughed, reminisced, and fielded questions from the audience. The four NPs leading the discussion, all of whom helped spearhead the movement in North Carolina, were Betty Compton, RN, FNP Cynthia Freund, PhD Connie Mullinix, PhD, MPH, MBA, RN and Donna Schafer Rawson, BSN, PNP, MS, FNP
Every single one of us here jumped at an idea we thought was good, but we had no idea what we were jumping into, Freund said. It was blind faith, but we thought it was the right thing for nurses to do and a great opportunity.
The NP program at the University of North Carolina had few expectations at first. Just a few weeks before the inaugural class starting taking classes in 1970, organizers were still looking for qualified candidates.
They came to my house because they had been in the community asking Who do you call when you have some problems at home or with a child? And people were saying, Well, we call Betty, Compton said. And so, they came to see who Betty was.
Compton signed up, and in doing so, helped initiate a new profession within nursing. Soon, clinics in Prospect Hill and Walstonburg were showcasing the talents of nurse practitioners. Initially, though, many people in nursing, medicine, and pharmacy were highly skeptical of NPs.

Appalachian State University is a public facility in Boone, North Carolina. It is a large university with over 17,000 undergraduates and over 3,000 postgraduates enrolled. The campus is in a scenic area in the Blue Ridge Mountains. There are over 140 undergraduate and graduate majors. Appalachian State is one of the 16 universities that are part of the University of North Carolina system. Appalachian State offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program for students who are not yet licensed as Registered Nurses . Students who complete the program are eligible to take the national examination for licensure as an RN. The nursing program trains future nurses to work in many different settings, and they are prepared to enter the workforce as soon as they become licensed as RNs. The nursing department admits up to 40 qualified students each year. The program is designed to take eight semesters plus one 8-week summer session that is scheduled between the sophomore and junior year. Students need 124 credits to graduate, and they must meet all general education required to complete the BSN as well as the nursing courses and clinical experience.

BSN Applications open in November and can be submitted after December 15 through the first day of classes of Spring semester.
This application process is highly competitive and the most highly qualified will be admitted to the program. Accepted students enter the nursing program in May of the first summer session.

East Carolina University East Carolina Universitys Master of Science in Nursing program is offered in eight concentrations. The adult gerontology nurse practitioner, clinical nurse specialist, neonatal nurse practitioner, nursing leadership, family nurse practitioner, nurse midwifery, and nursing education programs are all offered online while the nurse anesthesia program is campus-based. The adult gerontology nurse practitioner program requires students to complete 45 credits and minimum of 616 hours of a clinical practicum. The nursing leadership program consists of 41 credits and a 252-hour practicum. Students may study full time or part, depending on the particular concentrations requirements.
University of North Carolina at Charlotte The University of North Carolina at Charlotte confers the Master of Science in Nursing in family nurse practitioner across the lifespan, community/public health, nurse anesthesia, nurse educator, and nurse administrator. The family nurse practitioner across the lifespan track requires 46 credits with students beginning in the summer. The nurse anesthesia full-time program requires students to take courses, which are offered once each year, in sequence. Full-time or part-time study is permitted depending on the concentration. The Master of Science in Nursing Program at Appalachian State University is an online distance education program with a concentration in nursing education. The program prepares registered nurses for roles as nurse educators in a variety of academic, clinical, and/or staff development environments.
