Already have a Bachelors Degree but Want to go to Nursing School

Nursing is one of the most rewarding, fastest growing, and well-paid occupations. According to the Bureau of Labor Statics the demand for nurses is projected to rise by at least 15% over the next decade.

The salary in each state varies, but the average salary for a BSN is $63,000 $70,000 a year. You can visit Payscale and enter your state for a more accurate income amount.

When choosing a school, its important to pick from the best nursing programs around. The following schools list tuition cost per year for in-state residents unless otherwise stated and does not include room and board.

Benefits Of Becoming A Bsn

Nurses generally receive a nice benefits package for themselves and their families and you have different shifts to choose from, which can make your home life more enjoyable.

With the opportunity to travel, traveling nurses can take assignments that last anywhere from 6 weeks to six months. Traveling nurse jobs pay nearly double the amount that a regular nurse gets working at his/her local hospital. Travel agencies also offer day one benefits, a safe and clean apartment near the hospital, sign on bonuses, completion bonuses and much more.

Attending a second-degree nursing program opens up the opportunity for working in prestigious specialty areas and pursuing a higher level of education such as a masters degree in nursing, Nurse Practitioner, midwife etc.

    The Adn: Another Option

An associate degree may be your best local option, especially if you live in an area where theres a lower population and less educational access. You may also opt for the associates if the second bachelors program is more intensive than what youre looking for. And your local college may well offer a better deal. A 2011 article in The Community College Times reported that the average cost of tuition and fees for an ADN offered at a public two year college was just $6,120.

On the downside, some community colleges do have a significant wait list for their programs. Others have a more selective process, and offer spots sooner.

Is An Accelerated Nursing Program The Same As A Bridge Program

Both accelerated nursing programs and bridge programs offer paths to nursing degrees, but they are very different. Accelerated programs are designed for students who have a bachelors degree in another area. It allows them to take nursing courses at a fast pace and earn their BSN quickly. They arent meant for people with prior nursing experience.

In contrast, bridge programs are designed for current nurses who want to further their nursing education and seek a higher-level. For example, a licensed practical nurse can use a bridge program to earn their BSN without needing to spend four years in school. Similarly, an RN who has earned an Associate Degree in Nursing can pursue their Master of Science in Nursing degree with an RN-to-MSN bridge program.

What do they have in common? Both accelerated nursing programs and bridge programs save students time and money by allowing them to earn their degrees more quickly than they would pursuing traditional pathways.
