Signs Of A Strong Online Np Program

What exactly is a Nurse Practitioner?

Even with so many online nurse practitioner programs available, potential students can easily narrow their options when considering program components. For starters, only apply to programs accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, as this better ensures your chance of receiving licensure and competing for jobs. Also make sure the program offers a concentration in your area of focus, such as gerontology, family, or pediatric care. Program delivery also matters, so check whether the program exists in a synchronous or asynchronous format. Lastly, look for faculty with experience.

Is There Anything Else I Can Do To Strengthen My Application

Many variables are taken into consideration when reviewing a students application for admission. A strong foundation in courses such as anatomy and physiology, microbiology, pharmacology, and physical assessment is one key to success. Writing and grammar skills are also critically important for graduate-level education. Taking a writing course, particularly a technical writing course, may be of assistance. You may take these courses at a university of your preference. In addition, an applicants involvement in professional and organizational activities, as well as other scholarly activities, is evidence of leadership capabilities and interests. Current clinical experience is ideal and completion of certification in your specialty area is strongly recommended. We highly recommend that you spend several hours shadowing an advanced practice nurse in the specialty you wish to pursue.

Online Np Program Options

Synchronous programs

Nurse practitioner classes taught through synchronous learning most closely mimic brick-and-mortar classrooms. Nursing students must log-in at specific times to take part in live, face-to-face learning sessions. Most use videoconferences, telephones, and webcasts to connect peers and professors in real time. This method can increase student engagement and make it easier for learners who need more of a hands-on approach to feel involved and connected. They also make it easier to stay on track with learning, as classes happen at the same time each week.

Asynchronous programs

Asynchronous learning appeals to nursing students with busy schedules who possess the discipline needed to complete readings, assignments, and responses on their own timeline. While professors in your online NP program still set overarching deadlines for when work must be turned in, NP students can watch lectures, respond to peers, and study for exams at times that fit their schedule. Students who choose this option must know how to remain focused and on task without the weekly requirement of face-to-face interactions.

Which Dnp Program Is Right For Me

Registered nurses who enjoy the clinical side of their practice but want to move into advanced leadership roles beyond what a Master’s degree can provide can opt for a Doctor of Nursing Practice program. With multiple pathways, including direct programs for students who currently hold a BSN and options for those who hold an MSN or a PhD, a DNP prepares nurses to become leaders in interdisciplinary health teams to improve healthcare systems and policies, patient outcomes, and promote healthier communities. Keep in mind, a DNP is different from a PhD in nursing, which is more focused on research and teaching rather than clinical practice. In other words, a DNP is considered a practice doctorate, while a PhD is a research doctorate.

Upon graduating with a DNP, nurses are eligible for leadership roles in clinical practices or healthcare administration and have a direct impact on pushing the profession forward and developing policies that improve both patient outcomes and healthcare as a whole. Along with these rewarding tasks, DNP nurses regularly earn, on average, over $100,000 per year. With opportunities like this on the horizon, it’s imperative that RNs choose the right school and DNP program. Read on for our comprehensive guide to choosing the best DNP program for you:

Path To Dnp: Bsn To Dnp Vs Msn To Dnp

The Difference Between an Nurse Practitioner and a Doctor

Nurses who wish to expand their clinical knowledge, as well as their career opportunities, often choose to return to school and earn a master’s or doctoral degree in nursing. The DNP is considered the “terminal” degree in nursing as there is no higher degree available for nurses. However, there are different specialty tracks nurses can choose from to further broaden their clinical knowledge.

Depending on the nurse’s starting point, the road to a DNP can be a challenging one. For example, a BSN-prepared nurse has more of an academic journey than an MSN-prepared nurse. The different paths are explained in further detail below.

Do Students Have To Find Their Own Preceptor Or Clinical Site Can They Do Their Clinical Rotations Where They Work

Students are not required to find their own preceptor or clinical site. UMSON faculty members are committed to assigning students to clinical sites that are appropriate for course and program objectives. We are fortunate to have contacts with many nurse practitioner alumni and other providers who serve as preceptors. UMSON has clinical contracts with agencies in a variety of settings across the state of Maryland and in Washington, D.C. Students with a particular clinical site/preceptor of interest may forward the contact information to the course faculty member so the faculty member can determine whether the site is appropriate to meet the course objectives. Students should not complete their clinical rotations in the specific environments where they are employed due to a potential conflict of interest. Final approval of clinical site placement is at the faculty members discretion.

Clinical practicum settings are outpatient and community-based, such as in a family practice, primary care office, public and private clinics, and urgent care centers. Students will practice with nurse practitioners and physicians and will complete clinical practicum hours in womens health, adult, geriatric, and pediatric populations. Clinical hours are generally obtained Monday through Friday during routine office hours. It is not uncommon for students to commute 1-2 hours one way to clinical sites.
